Any tricks on getting the dual pulley off the alternator? I have the hex wrench and a socket for the nut but how do you get both at the same time? Is there a tool or do I need to look for one of those sockets with the wrench flats? Clyde
Had someone lightly hold the pulley with channel-locks and remove the nut with an electric impact wrench. Sometimes an old-fashioned parts store (one with tools) will do it for you for free.
There is no need to use channel locks . I have removed many with bare hands or a rag holding the pulley. You take a chance of scratching the pulley with the channel locks. If you do not have an air supply get the electric impact gun from Harbour Freight etc.
No sweat with it . I started using a leather glove which is the safe way but over the years and after having done so many I just grab the pulley. Just a short burst now for both on and off.
So...did your local auto parts dealer give you an alternator with a single pulley, and you want to swap the dual pulley from your core? An impact will make this extraordinarily easy. At least, getting the pulley off will be easy. But when I tried this, the shaft from the single pulley alternator was too short to for me to install the dual pulley. Anybody else find this to be the case? Any solution?
Thanks That was to easy, boy do I feel silly. Anyway got it off so I can clean and rebuild it. Thanks Clyde
