hey all, getting dual exhaust put on my 81 Electra w/307.....and i'm wondering what I should do with the catalytic converter. the guy at the shop (i wont rat him, lol) suggested I let him take it off, but of course come registration time i'd need to know somebody that would pass it when I went for inspection. not sure what to do here...i know my single most power-drainer right now is that stupid catalytic converter....but i don't want to have any probs. with the law should my car be too loud....i'm going to have two 18" glass packs on it with 3" tips so i don't think i'll be too loud to cause any suspision...but still your all's insight would be great...thanks in advance cmdr
How about high flow cats? They make those.....somewhereo No: Since you're in MO, hopefully you don't have to go through teh gateway clean air program like I do. I think KC also has a similar program that kills people like us. Buy a set of electric dumps attached to side pipes:grin:
You will attract plenty of attention with glasspacks. Has to be the worst "muffler" ever. I would go with a nice set of turbos. As for the cat, if it is original it is probrably about plugged anyway. I took the cat of my GN and it actually blew cleaner than before. There are ways around the sniffer. Speed your idle up, lean out the mixxture, create a small vacumn leak, and get it good and hot and it will pass.
iv heard of people taking their cats and hollowing em out. getting all that gunk outa there ya know. then putting em back in. just like a strieght pipe. if the fuzz is sweatin you for your car being loud and takes a look under your car, he still sees cats down there. just a thought... pete
had a 1976 cutlass ...dual exhaust no cats......passed the emissions every time....I was just sweating and worried if they ever use them mirrors on a stick 2 look underneath....they do that sometimes.... ..the car ran good...with out cats the car picked up good highway mpg...

Just mirrors on a stick? They lift your car in the air here, but we have no sniffer test... most people just run shells of cats with a pipe through them (and all the insides taken out via a cutting torch and a bit of welding)
no smog for 30+ year old cars out here in ca! and in the imperial county, where i used to live, you only have to smog newer cars the first time you register it. then its all yours untill you want to sell it! none of that every two years crap!
you got that right it sucks! man ppl in this ol stick town will report you, all cuz you woke their dog up and then you have to take your car down to the police shop, have them look under it to make sure you have what you're "supposed to", and then if you have a certain last name or your family has so much $$ then you're off scott free, if you're like most of us as well as myself you get slapped with a ticket. ah, anyways...just a rant. i'm going to get the exhaust put on tommorow, and i should have something figured out by then. cmdr
