What air cleaners are yall running with Carter AFBs? I think they have a 4 7/32?" top which won't fit 99% of aftermarket air cleaners. Does anyone know of a good adapter? I heard the Mr Gaskets are junk
The Mr Gasket adapter is plastic, but it works to fit the later 5 1/8 dia. air breathers. To my knowledge it is the only one made. Frank
Damn, a guy on another forum told me he's gone through like 5 of them because theyre so cheaply made. I guess I'll give it a try. At least it's cheap
You might want to consider swapping the top off your vintage AFB with a newer AFB that has the larger air horn. I've never tried it but at first glance it looks like it should work.
I didn't think about that. All AFBs are different though, I doubt one would be the same top with just a different diameter though.
Well, both my air cleaner adapters broke already. I had to take the damn carbs off to get all the plastic pieces out. I hate mr gasket, worst company ever
Damn, that sucks. I try to avoid mr gasket where ever I can but they were the only ones who make that crap.
Let me chip in here just a little,,,, At BG this last year , I saw a stainless steel air cleaner that was made in the shape of a 5 point star,,, obviously a one off custom item... but it was beautifull and functional with ram air hoses connected to it.... seems like it was on a black 65 skylark.... tried to find the owner but could not ,,, would love to know the details , plans for it , ect so I could copy it..... I am sure it could be made to work with dq's or single carb.....
we had a customer that also broke a mr.g adapter , but on the other hand have sold a few others with no problem . found one from ******* at summit racing website , part #66315 . also plastic etc and comparable price so not sure how much better it may be . could be worth checking out . del ### EDIT : huh - wouldn't let me put in company name ? ok - "mroforp" , just hold up to the mirror ! see if that goes .
They made a lot of different AFBs. Mine have the fuel inlet on the top drivers side so an Edelbcrock cover wouldn't work
Contact Mark Burton about having some adapters made in aluminum for you: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=181748 Devon
A piece of 1/8th. inch thick aluminum plate cut to the proper I.D. & O.D. diameters works. As well as swapping tops with the newer Edelbrocks if the fuel inlets are in the proper spots. Then again, it doesn't take a lot to change the fuel inlet supply. Just my thoughts.
I'd rather buy 2 adapters than buy 2 used edelbrocks and swap tops and relocate the fuel inlets and run new fuel lines. I'd much rather buy or make an adapter.
I found a thicker plastic adapter from an EBay seller in N. California a couple of years ago. I use it to bridge between the Carter and the Star Wars aircleaner, e.g. 4 7/8 to 5 1/4, I believe. It has held up well. If you are still looking, I can see if I have the mailing information (if that is permitted on this board). Jim
