Hi Duane, here is an odd one for you....I have removed the steering box off my 72 GS 455 parts car. It came with the N41 variable ratio steering. Once I cleaned it up, the little flat spot on top where the date code goes said " 040 1"...now that to me would be the 40th day of 1971.

The little yellow code sticker was still there and careful cleaning revealed a "DV". I checked the buildsheet form this car and the steering box square had a "DV" in there so it is the correct code.

This car is a 72, built second week of October, 1971.

So how does a car built in Oct 71 end up with a box form Feb 71?? (I did pull the side cover off, it appears to be the variable ratio style, with the different center tooth).

Any thoughts?? Did you get the money order yet?

    Tim,
You are correct with all your info.
I often see parts that predate the build date of the car my months, but that box appears a little early. Sometimes a part gets "stuck" in the bottom of a bin and doesn,t get used until later, or possibly buick didn't sell many of this style part, so the parts didn't get used up as fast. There is another date cast into the cast iron body, What is that date?

As far as the money order, I will check with Beth.

On my 71, fischer date 1st week September 1970

I found a date on the aluminum alt mtg bracket that was December of 69 or so......10 months before the build date!:Do No:

It seems every now & then, something odd like that come up when you close at the parts, but most of the time, I'd say within 3 months is most common...:Brow:

Tim, here is another example why that can be. What if that gear box was 1st rejected (maybe for a very simple fix, a stripped thread or so), then it was returned to the vendor (or manufacturing department internal to GM). Eventually the box is re-worked, then supplied at a later date.:Do No:

It happens daily where I work.:error:

Duane, there is the p/n cast into the box, then a "34" and also a "44" both seperate. Odd. I was thinking that since the N41 was such an unusual option that perhaps it just sat forever before being used up.

I can take pics if you wish.

    Tim,
It sounds like the rest of the box matches the date of the cover.
