I'm sure someone out there can help me with this one. I did a search and could not locate any info. Has anyone out there dyed seatbelts? If so, what did you use to dye them, and where did you get it? I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks.
I haven't done it yet, but have considered trying it. Use Rit dye. I did the carpet in my truck and it turned out great!! :TU: You can get it in a liquid or powder form. Got my last box of it at Kmart.....sure it's available in many places. I would probably use the liquid on belts. After you apply the dye, you'll want to rinse it REAL good....to keep it from coming off on your clothes. Keep flushing it until the water comes out clear. You could probably clamp the belt fully extended. No real need to get that last couple of inches. Let us know how it turns out.
I have used Rit on carpet too with good results. What I did was use one of those cheap foam brushes to apply it. That might be a good way for seat belts as opposed to dipping. An spray on carpet protector like Skotch Guard afterwards might also help with the initial color rub off. It did for the carpet.
I used rit on my seatbelts, they were kinda a faded tan to start with and did it about a year ago and they are holding up well,I have read somewhere though that they claim it makes em weak but I do not use em anyway as am not required to by Nebraska law but I have read that somewhere but kinda do not believe it,go ahead and do it I think you will be happy with the results,oh I dyed mine black so that is probably the bets color to do but what are you changing from, what colors?
I use SEM Vinyl Dye and never had a problem. I was the belts in hot soapy water, rinse with hot water and then put them in the sun to dry. Spray 2-3 coats, very light, and the belts coming out looking like new!
Thanks guys i appreciate it. The belts are basically a tan color, and I want them black so I think that will work out well. George, where do you get SEM vinyl dye? Sounds to me like it is in spray form?
SEM comes in spray cans and they have the colors listed on their website. Any Sherwin-Williams Auto Body/Paint supply store carries them. Cost is about $7/can.
AMEN to the SEM vinyl spray. I re did some windlace that wwas dark green and dyed it black and it looks great. I am waiting to the interior door panels and dash next.
Good by Rit, hello SEM. Always learn something here. Mixing the Rit dye was never any fun anyway. Although for touching up faded carpet it might be the trick.
