I was looking to quiet down the car a little. One of the intents of this car is to have something we can comfortably drive a few hundred miles to shows around the state.

The car was a little too loud to comfortably listen to the radio or have a conversation at highway speeds (2600ish rpm)

Set up is: 455, TA shortie headers, 3 inch pipes with X cross over to mufflers, 2.5 from mufflers out to back.

After reading some older threads, it seems that many recommended the 20 inch Walker or dynomax turbo mufflers.

I swapped from 14 inch to 20 inch dynomax super turbos today. (Disregard in video when I call the 14 inchers 16 inches...)

In summary, dropped average decibels about 6-8 and eliminated drone at highway and cruising speed. Happy with the results.

Videos and screen shots of decibel readings below:

20 inch - tight fit, but they fit.

I just put these 20 inch Super Turbos on my '71 455 with a full 2 1/2 in. exhaust system and stock (ported) manifolds & no crossover or H pipe. It replaces the previous 2 1/2 in. system with Flowmaster Series 40s. It made a huge difference in both quieter operation at all RPMs and no drone at all. I'm very happy with the Walkers.

I was going to go with Flowmasters, but I put 'em back on the shelf and decided on the Walkers, Im glad I did:TU:

Both 14 inch and 20 inch mufflers are 2 1/2 inlet and outlet.

My 20 inch Walker 17749s are also 2 1/2 in.

Ray, are your mufflers side/side (double offset) or side/center (single offset)? I have the same setup you have waiting to go on my 68 and I am glad to hear of your good results.

They are double offset 2 1/2 in & 2 1/2 in out. I installed them with the Torque Tech 2 1/2 in mandrel bent exhaust system and the go perfectly with it. Amazing how mellow they are at light throttle and when you get on it, they growl big time.

Yep, that's what I have - Torque Tech 2 1/2" pipes with double offset 17749 Walkers. My system is for headers but until I can get the headers installed, I am going to run it with the manifolds. I will either buy some head pipes or have my muffler guy make some.

I have my system also installed with stock manifolds using the TA mandrel bent head pipes. My stock exhausts were ported by Jim Rodgers and only gave up about 15 HP to the headers on the dyno. For that small difference, I decided to keep the motor stock appearing.

Those TA head pipes are nice, I may just get those. I have a brand new set of M/T SS headers that are going to go on it sometime but not right now. My mufflers that I have on it right now are rusted out and get louder every time I drive it so I have to do something soon.

Mine has 2 1/2 front to back Torque Tech and the 20" Dynomax Super Turbos. No drone, fairly quiet. Rode in a car with Magnaflows and it had a lot of drone, which is why I chose the Dynomax/Walkers.
