I bought a universal electric chokce conversion from Carbs Unlimited last week and it came today. It has ONE post, not 2 like the edelbrocks. Is that just for the positive wire? I see the coil side has a metal plate that looks like it acts as the ground for it. Am I correct? I assume all I have to do is connect the hot wire to the choke.
BTW, Carbs Unlimited was a fantastic company to deal with. I actually ordered the wrong kit and they called me the next morning to tell me. I ended up paying half as much for the right kit. It was shipped the day I fixed the order and it got here today. Excellent people to deal with, and excellent service:TU:
Phone number Do you have a phone number for them? How easy was the kit to install and how did it work? I have a 350 without a choke which takes about 10min. to warm up before it is really drivable. Thanks, David
Carbs Unlimited Great source for Carb Parts in cluding ELECTRIC CHOKE CONVERSION KITS! 253-926-9228 :TU:
Are you guys putting these kits on your Q jets? Do they require a hot air source? Half the reason I have a Holley is so that I can run an electric choke!
Yes the Electric choke conversion kit is for a Quadrajet. It basically replaces the black plastic cap on the choke housing. I haven't installed it yet, but my car is already wired for it. I will be instaling it either tonight or tomorrow depending on the weather. I'll let you know about the hot air source. I figure since the edelbrocks don't use the heat rising pipe this one won't either.
Thanks! But, I am missing something here My 350 had a "divorced" choke, meaning that the thermostat mounted on the intake with a small rod going to the carb. Yours has a black cap? What year carb is that, and is it a Buick carb?? Still corn-fused...
They make a conversion kit for the divorced choke which is $59.95. That sucks, considering mine is about half that. I have a later model QJet off a 76 455. Emissions crap. I don't nkow what type the choke is called, but it used a tube that connects from the choke housing to the intake manifold. Maybe a vacuum choke??uzzled: o No: Anyway, I am testing it tomorrow to see if I need to adjust it. I'll let you know how it goes.
OK, Thanks. I think this is because you have a newer model. Yours is a hot air type now. The tube draws hot air from your exhaust crossover in the intake. I'd imagine that with the electric conversion it'll work like my Holley does. There is a wire that goes to a key on power source. The choke slowly heats up electrically Vs. with exhaust heat. That would be good for me as well, because I totally blocked off the exhaust heat.
'scuse me for buttin' in.... sbbuick-if I understood your post, you indicated you blocked off your ehxaust heat crossover? Please fill me in on how you did this. Thanks
I think some gaskets are made to have the heat crossovers blocked off. Maybe TA has these. I've heard lots of people do it. It keeps the paint from scorching on the intake when it gets hot.
jimsgs, there was a thread awhile back on how to block off your heat cross over passages, just can't remember whereo No:Anyway you just get some different size freeze plugs and see what fits. You can get these at most hardware stores or auto parts stores.I'll see if I can find the thread on that.:TU:
OK found it. It's at www.atlantabuick.com. Go to the performance section and click on HEAD/BLOCK Casting Numbers.Scroll down and you'll see a title Blocking Exhaust Heat Crossovers.Tells you what you want to know. :TU:
Carbs unlimited? I called Carbs Unlimited today they said they only make electric choke conversions for Pontiacs not Buicks. I have a 71 Electra with a 455 and the original Q-Jet. They said I would have to modify it. Any one knows how I would have to do that? Thanks, Anthony
You can talk to tlivingd here on the board about that. He just did this with his 70 lark. The same will apply to you. His name's Nate...nice guy:TU:
Thanks Adam Thanks Adam for the good word. hope his divorced choke is simmilar to mine... I'm talking to Anthony about it. hopefully he can send me a pic of his carb. Nate
70 and 71 carbs are interchangeable as far as choke assemblies go. They looks slightly different, but there is no functional difference.
