I have a 800 edelbrock with electric choke on a 455 first start up of the day the choke engages the engine goes to fast idle than slowly starts to chug and will eventually die.I have set the choke set the mixture to 1and 3/4 turns out have set the fast idle screw and the curb idle. There is power going to the choke but it does not open the choke, once the engine is warm there are no problems the rest of the day.Do i need a new electric choke pull off?

When you first start it cold the choke should be fully shut.

As soon as it starts the vacume in the motor should pull it open. Then the choke pulloff should move and pull it further open to a point that the motor should "clean out" and run smoothly. There is settings for the distance from the choke horn to the choke plate in the carb settings list. You adjust this (if you choke pulloff is working) by bending the rod on the pulloff.

    Good luck

It appears that there is an issue with the choke pull-off, which is a diaphragm controlled device allowing a cold engine to breathe until the choke coil begins to heat. Here is how it should work; When the engine is first cranked cold, the choke blade is completely closed, restricting incoming air. When the engine starts, the choke pull-off receives vacuum from the manifold, pulling open completely. The linkage in between adjusts the resulting choke blade opening, which if measured between the rear most choke housing, and the open blade is typically about 1/8 ". If this diaphragm is defective, a most likely scenario, the blade will not open sufficiently to allow the engine to breathe. It will then typically starve for air, causing a cold flood. This diaphragm is typically the same one controlling the air valve opening "tip-in", allowing a smooth opening during WOT performance. Try this; start the engine, preferably have someone else start it, and observe the diaphragm on the pass side of the carb. It should pull down quickly and completely. If slow, or incompletely pulling down, it requires replacement. Do not confuse the normal movement with the slowness. To confirm, try pushing gently on the diaphragm, bottoming it. Then put your finger over the vacuum opening. If it quickly moves back to the extended position, it is defective. Let me know what the results of this tests reveal, and we'll go from there. Ray

    choke pull off

The beast sat quite for three day's too busy to drive it, but today i popped the hood and vissually went over all the steps. Turned the engine over and also turned the fast idle screw clockwise approximatly half of one turn and no chugging or dead, idled nicely and choke pull off engaged, apparentally there wasn't enough fast idle to keep the engine running smooth enough in order for the choke pull off to engage before the engine died. Thank you for information I'll keep it in the knowledge vault.
