Thanks for the compliment! It's a late '80's GM color called "Black Sapphire Metallic", a very dark blue that really pops in the sunlight. The stripe is PPG's old candy Radiance II line.

I think the drive to sit down with your bud would be time well spent. If he's up to speed he should be able to do a really good job of explaining the pros/cons of the Dupont line (great rep by the way) and why he likes some things and maybe not others. With excellent prep work, even a middle-of-the-line paint system can really look good. Ask lots about durability and what is required for repair should anything unfortunate happen. Never skimp on the primers and sealers, otherwise even high-end paint will look poor right away or degrade later...or both.

    Jason,
I hope you don't mind my asking this question in your thread, but it I think it is a relevant question.

I've been looking at these kits on TCP Global's site.

    http://www.tcpglobal.com/restorationshop/rsp2202.aspx

When they refer to a "Fast kit, Medium kit, or Slow kit" are they referring to the dry time? Time between coats? Dependent on weather conditions?
Is it best to just split the difference and go with the medium?

They list these options whether it is enamel, lacquer, or urethane.

Dale, it refers to the speed with which the reducer will evaporate, or the hardener will cure (depending on type of paint). Hot weather requires a slow evaporating (or hardening) material so that the topcoat has a chance to "flow", cold weater requires something that sets more quickly to avoid runs.

Google autobodydepot or www.tcpglobal.com - I have bought HOUSE OF KOLOR products from them with good luck. Their prices are real good and they used to offer free shipping over a certain amount spent. They also offer everything you could imagine for doing your own body work at wholesale prices-including many other paint options. I have been able to buy products cheaper from them than local wholesale suppliers I deal with everyday through my job.

I have a whole Gallon of Dupont Chroma Base Paint here, If Maroon is what you might be looking for. I'd Sell it for $85 + shipping and you can get the reducer at any dupont jobber. I bought it to repaint my Roadmaster but have since decided to go in a new direction.

I paint for a living.I use BASF products they have a cheaper line called Limco. The Limco clear was some of the best clear I ever used it's about $130.00 a gallon with hardner.I work in a large body shop that goes through a lot of body men every time a new one strats they cant believe I use cheap clear it looks that good. You can use any type of base coat over Dupont primer. If you choose to stay with Dupont base coat and use Nason clear. The Nason clear isn't bad either, my dad uses it at work. He's been painting for 52 years.

BASF doesn't make the products you use, they make the producs you use work better ;)

    couldn't help it.

I got two of their SEMA promo dolls 90-91 from corectly guessing which sample was real leather or their fake leather.

    Thanks for the links!:TU:

Thanks but maroon is probably the only color I'm not considering.

So it's not necessary to go w/ a Dupont base? I was under the assumption that I should stay with the same system. Cause if I can get HOC cheap or something similar, that would be cool!!!:TU:

    Once again, thanks guys!!!:TU:

If you properly prep the primer, you can put any type of base coat over it. Where you get yourself into trouble is mixing products. If you use a Dupont primer and put a different brand of hardner into the primer. The same principal applies to your clear coats. If you use Dupont clear you want to use Dupont hardener in it.

I agree. I have never had any trouble. I have used dupont/nason urethane primer with House Of Kolor Base with Nason Clear with awsome results. I had an issue with the uc35 HOUSE of KOLOR clear on a candy/flake paint job once (it was a rear soft film for the first year) so I tried the Nason clear on my next job and It worked great over the House Of Kolor base. It is still holding up great after four years with no issues.
