Iam in the process of purchasing a 1956 That has a V8 that the owner says has a bad knock. Will a late 60's to mid 70"s drop in with little to no problems.

You have a torque tube issue. You would be better off putting the body on a early 70 Buick wagon frame. I have seen a 57 Super on a 72 estate wagon frame. It was a good fit.

Jim may be right, if you want to swap the frame out.
Installing a later engine is quite a bit of work. You will need to change the trans, the rear (although some have machined parts to keep the original rear) make a drive shaft, create a rear end locating system (ie: four bar/ladder bar/tracking arms etc...)
It can be done and there have been several threads in the past about this. Try searching for open drive conversions, or trans swaps.
It would be chaeper and easier to have the motor in the car rebuilt.
Either way, do your homework and plan it out.
