    Please help me confirm the ID of the block I have before I loose the deck code after I zero deck it.

    Deck code shows: "TR". I reference that to '71

    Front block reads: "41H474591". I'd assume this references a '71 also because of the second number being a "1".

    The heads read: "1242445", referencing a '72. (I have no history on the block)

    From what I read, nothing on the block would help me identify what type of car this motor came out of... right??

    Am I missing anything?

    Thanks,

    John

    NOT TRUE!!! GS 455 cars had code TR on the blocks, stage 1 cars had TS code...the GS 455 engine was the same as big cars, so its not an uncommon thing (relatively speaking).

    You would have to match the last 6 digits of the number on that block to a VIN to id the car is came from:

    41H474591
    4=buick
    1=1971
    H=flint
    474591 match the vin of car

  4. Tim, what's the scoop with the TA code mentioned on the buicks.net site? Is that a misprint? What would a 71 455 Riv or Electra have been coded?

    Guess a guy can't believe everything he reads... :Do No:

  5. I see Atlanta Buick site tells a different tale than Buicks.net, showing only TR and TS 455 codes in 71.

    The Year One catalog shows TA, TR, & TS (Stage 1) as the only engine codes associated with a '71 455

    David, I know TR and TS come on the 71 GS's (had a 71 GS 455 #'s matching never been touched car and it was TR code)..and of course my Stage 1 should be code TS (if they hadn't blown it up in 75)....as for the TA, my 71 Buick Service Manual shows it as the Riveria GS engine. Standard Riv engine would have been TR I guess. I've heard rumours that the Riv GS's all got stage 1 heads, perhaps that explains the different code.

    Wasn't jumping on you just wanted to make sure it got noticed. A TR code engine is nothing special, just a 71 buick 455.

    Another one I see all over the place (including year one which I think has many mistakes and is a terrible resource) is the production #'s for 71 cars. Everyone says 801 Stage 1 cars, but some show 680 GS 455's and others show 1481 GS 455 cars....I had always seen 680 until about 6-8 years ago when the 1481 suddenly showed up. It just so happens that 1481 - 801 =680.....hhhmmmmm.......

    Always have to keep an open mind, NOTHING on the web is gospel, some of it is downright crap. Also, the real details are murky right from Buick on some of this stuff.

    Regardless, only way to find out where that engine came from would be to find the car with the last 6 digits....can't even do that easily since they didn't put the whole VIN on so no way of knowing whihc car line it came from.

  8. Heck Tim, I didn't take it that way! Most of us, at one time or another, have gotten our facts screwed up. I would rather have 10 guys jump in to correct my mistake, than to have it accepted as being correct by the person asking for help. :cool:
