Where will I findthe block ID number on this 455 (70 model). What codes might I hope for? It can't be an SS because it's a Lesabre... are all non Stage 1 engines the same in 1970 (370/510)? I hope ? Where is the best source to decode the intake, distributor etc? TIA Frank
Hi Frank - Look on the block, just below the head, between the drivers side two rear spark plugs for the two digit engine code 1970 Codes SF - 'Big Car' (370/510) SR - GS455 (350/510) SS - GS Stage1 (360/510) I've read the SF and SRs are identical. There's many knowledgeable people right here who would be willing to decode your castings. Post the part #s :bglasses:
Between 5-7 spark plugs on the block. It should be sf or sr. The answer is yes. All except S1 , the insides are the same.
Frank, The 2 letter code will be stamped into the deck surface between the #5 and #7 plugs. There is a part of the deck that is not covered by the heads. It gathers alot of dirt, so be prepared to clean that area before you look. This is a picture of Wolverine's 350 at the Nats. You can see the SP code, and the #'s 268, which is a date code. This illustrates the area you need to look at.
Here's a few casting #s for you. www.buicks.net/shop/reference/bigblock_casting_numbers.html Carb #s www.atlantabuick.com/Specs.htm#Quadrajet ID%Chart site.
Thank you all for responding. I will check tomorrow and send a pic! This engine runs awesome... 78K... I will replace seals and gaskets externally, clean it up, paint it, detail my engine compartment, and drop it in! Frank
