    Need Help

My 71 GS 350 with 4 speed just died. Engine turn over without any problem, checked the sparkplugs, and carburator has fuel. I drove the car the day before and it started acting up but got it home without problems but it also seem to run hotter than usual. The GS is all original with 62k miles. I have own the car since 1985 without any problems. Where do I start!!!!

I removed the points two weeks ago when the car was acting funny. I thought it was the points. I replaced the points with electronic ignition under the factory cap. The car was still running after I did the replacement.

Pull a plug wire off and take an old plug put in it and ground it on the motor. Then turn the motor over with the starter and see if you have any spark! :Do No:

If you have spark then check to see if you have any fuel in the carb.

With spark and fuel it should run!

My bet is that something happened with the ignition. The coil or the new ignition you put in.

    Good luck.

0K, check this stuff in this order:

Voltmeter set to read 20 volts DC. Positive meter wire to coil + terminal, negative meter wire to engine ground (carb stud, etc.), all ignition wires left in place. Turn key/ignition switch to run position, should have at minimum 9.0 volts, then to start, should have voltage present at both key positions, doesn't in one or both key positions, find and fix wiring/switch problem(s).

Next, voltage present at coil, no spark, remove the black wire from the Ignitor to the negatgive coil terminal and connect voltmeter to read voltage through that wire (wire thru meter to ground), lowest voltage scale the meter has, spin engine. Voltage present, look to coil, no voltage (voltage will not be high, but read intermittantly, and low), you will then have -

    Yet another useless, dead Ignitor.

Now, for a question, did the "electronic ignition" cure the original performance loss issue before the system went dead???

Is this gonna be another Pertronix failure?

I installed the new igintion because I thought it was the points. The points have not been replaced since 1990. The car was acting up prio to installing the new igintion. Saturday my brother is going to help me and see what is going on. We are both Bucik GS nuts and this will be resolved!!!! I will keep all posted. Thanks for all the help from all!!!!

    Hi and Thanks

My favorite brother (I only have one) came over and we finally got the GS started. Well I can say to all it was my fault that it died. When I installed the Pertronix, the wires were installed to close to the dist. cam and cut the wire so it would not start. So I guess I have to make this following statement!!!!

Vince, thanks for all your help, your a GOD in my book and the best brother that any one can have!!! One more thing! Your 72 GS455 is the best GS ever and also the fastest.

To all who game me some info. thanks!
