I had 3 cans of Krylon Buick red 2114 on my shelf but was concerned that it was only rated to 300 deg F. Thinking a higher temp paint under it would help, I looked around and picked up a can of Duplicolor BCP100 caliper red 500 deg F ceramic enamel. The thought was to use Duplicolor high heat cermic engine primer 500 deg , the caliper red, then final topcoat with the Krylon 2114. I did not get side by side comparison pics (I can later as i make more progress), but to me, the caliper red and Krylon looked identical going on. The color did not change as I put the final 2114 topcoat, and sections that had not been topcoated looked identical to sections just sprayed with the Krylon. A day later the color still looks the same. Yes the caps are different with the 2114 cap darker, but the final products look 20180916_145450_resized.jpg 20180916_145512_resized_1.jpg the same.

And yes I know I have to clean up overspray

The judges will never notice unless one whips out the engine paint color chip card LOL. I did mine with regular old Rustoleo apple red AND a healthy layer of zinc cold galvanizing primer underneath and three years later (3000 miles) its barely even browned the paint around the exhaust ports WITH headers. ws

I always prepare my engines by painting them hi heat Ford red or even IH Red or Massey Ferguson red, then paint the 2114 over top of those colors. The hi heat paint helps preserve the paint on top for a longer time. Now,I use red caliper paint and it never stands out. I don't have access to someone who could paint it in a paint booth so I have to do as I have done on many engines in my car

From what I have been hearing you cannot get the 2114 Krylon paint anymore. I have a couple cans left but that's it. I used the garbage CARS "pink" paint underneath the 2114 as a base coat. That's all the CARS paint was worth, was as an undercoat.

I have about 8 or 10 cans of the Krylon 2114 put away for emergencies... :)

I have used spray paint waaay older than these with no problem so I am hoping these will work, too, when I need them.

So as someone who has none of the out of production Buick Red paints, am I reading that the Dupli-color Caliper red is a good match? Can someone confirm?

Yes, I can confirm from my results

Scott are you confirming a match or are you just saying you like the color and it is good enough of a match? Just curious. From the cap color they do not seem too close of a match, as the Buick red was typically a deeper, "blood-ish" red if you will.

Let me spray something side-by-side, then let dry and get some pics

Make sure you invert the can and blow the pick up tube and nozzle clear if you just need a dash of paint on something.

Just for kicks, this is OEM 1974 Buick Red. Slightly weathered LOL... ws

When we were trying to come up with the paint to use on the engine in Kurt's 69 Riviera, I sprayed test panels with Duplicolor and Krylon Buick reds and compared them to the 5 1970 455s I had easy access to. The Duplicolor didn't match any of the engines. The Krylon matched 1 (23,000 mile Electra 225 engine) and all 5 of the engines were slightly different shades of red. Since the 2114 matched one, he scanned it and mixed up some DuPont to match. The engine still looks great.
