This may be a stupid question, but I need to know because I'm going to Carlisle this weekend and I do not want to get scammed. How do you tell the difference between a buick 455 and a buick 350. I do not see much difference. Any info would help. I'd also like to know where the date code is on a 455. I'm looking for a 70 Stage 1 and I want to make sure the numbers weren't stamped on the engine. So how do I tell from the date code is the engine did indeed come in the car? Can I tell if the engine came with the car from the date code? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Piece of cake...

bore will be 4.3125 if ya got a tapemeasure, and there should be a 455 on the bellhousing lip in the back, where you would see it behind the intake if ya looked down with it in the car.It is physically larger, but if ya never had either a 350 or 455 ya might not notice....hope that helps..by the way I have a friend there by the name of Wayne Whatley, that might even have a 455 for sale at Carlisle. He will be with a Red Chevy dually. I know that probly wont help,BUT I have his cell #,and if you want I can call him and have him call you...hope I can help...fish

Maybe I should have been more specific. I'm not just looking for a 455 engine. I'm looking for a numbers matching 70 GS Stage 1. If their are any at Carlisle I wanna make sure i'm getting what im paying for. Thanks.

    I get it...

You need a 70 Stage 1 with the correct block stampings, correct cyl heads,wp,intake, exh manifolds, date coded Qjet, and all the right tins like stage 1 specific chrome valvecovers....fish

    "SS" stamped on the deck

Near the oil tube is as close to a "#'s matching" as you can get (unless you find one that also just happens to have your Vin derivative on it). :TU:

dan is right. look for a vin# starting with 446370H ( coupe ) or 446670H
( conv ), SS coded block, dist. # ending w/ 016. carb # 7040246, chrome v/c's. BB trans code if automatic, bigger pulley on A/C compressor, and i think an OO axle code. the valve covers for a 350 & 455 have a different number of bolts, but right now i cant remember which has what.

some of the clone builders are getting pretty slick, and they like to dump em at carlisle. that place is crawling with crooks. i would be very carefull buying anything at carlisle especially if the car has no documentation from either sloan museum, wayne roberts, or a build sheet.

there was a 71 there a couple years ago that the guy tried to tell me that because it had an "H" in the serial number that means its a stage 1. all the H means is that the car was built in flint.

I know about the scams at Carlisle. I just want a numbers matching car. I don't care if the engine isn't totally original or anything. I just want to make sure its the original block transmission, and rear.
