I'm preparing to swap 455s in my Riv (1973). I've heard that you can actually swap this engine without removing the hood. Is this true? I've always just removed hoods while swapping engines and never gave it another thought, but it would definately be easier to not have to do it. Nick
I would recommend removing the hood, since it will ensure you more safety and even though it takes some time to take it off, it may save you time to take it off than to leave it on since if you do leave it on, you would have to more steadily and slowly guide the engine up than just actually doing it in no time at all. Just my thoughts! :Comp:
All right, All right. I just thought it might be interesting to try it, but I'm going to take it off. It isn't really lined up well anyway, so getting it back on just like it came off isn't that important, either. Hopefully, I can do a better job than the last guy who had the hood off, who was also the last guy to replace the engine, which is quite a turd. We'll see how successful I am. You gotta admit, though, that if you could replace the engine on a car without replacing the hood, that'd be something, right? :Brow: OK, maybe not.
i r&r my engine all the time without takin off the hood.it's easy, saves time.70 gs rac/showcar. dan 10.61@125mph
If you take the hood off and put it back on after you are done with the engine work DO NOT I repete DO NOT open the doors in a hurry. Be carfull to check the clearance between the door and hood befor opening the doors all the way been there done that ou:
I almost always remove and replace the engine with the hood on. I remove the carb and bolt on an engine lift plate and this gives me just enough room.
uzzled: I can't imagine how you could raise the engine high enough to get it over the front of the car. When you take into account the room the boom of the crane, and any length of chain take up. I use a chain hoist hanging from my garage rafters. (Reinforced rafters of course) So, I have little choice then to take the hood off. Holy crap! I got lucky with my '72 Electra! It never occured to me then, but I can see how easily that could happen now!
I r&r the engines often in my 76 LeSabres without removing their hoods. Just tie close as possible to the engine, remove radiator, and turn engine sideways as it passes over the core support. No problem at all. Works on the 67 Riv also and 69 Camaro too. Can't seem to do it with the K5 Blazer though.
That's a good tip about the potential door/hood interference. I'll keep that in mind, although I now am again considering NOT taking off the hood. I don't use a lift plate, though. I use a tilting spreader contrivance, and plan on removing the trans, as well, so I may need some extra room. I can't wait to get a decent motor in this car.
