Well, I put in a new ignition switch and no change, I still have 12 volts on my + coil wire. I also have 3.8 volts on my #4 (brown) wire that goes to my voltage regulator with the key off and the regulator wire harness unhooked. I then have 12 volts on this wire when I turn on the key. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tim
Tim, Who replaced the resistance wire for the HEI conversion? How was it run? Was the resistance wire replaced completely from the firewall to the distributor? How about the wire from the starter solenoid "R" terminal. Is it still connected? I'm trying to figure out why you have 12 volts with the key off, that is not normal, and is part of the problem.
Jim, unplugged. Larry originally I ran a wire from my fuse block "IGN" terminal which I figured that it would have power only with the ignition on. I still have the "R" wire hooked up to the solenoid, I figured it was ok to leave since I was running a different power source. So now I have hooked up the original coil wire with no modifications to the wire. Hope this additional info helps. Tim
Tim, Try unhooking the wire at the "R" terminal and taping it off. It isn't needed with the HEI or MSD. The starter solenoid supplies 12 volts via the "R" terminal for quicker starts with points. Maybe that part of the solenoid is sticking, and supplying 12 volts all the time. I'm about out of suggestions. How far are you from JW's shop?
Ok that actually sounds like it might be the problem considering that everything worked fine for two days I am 20 minutes and I think I will stop by there tomorrow. Thanks Tim
Larry, you are a genius!!! I unhooked the "R" wire and everything works now!!! Car rus great and shuts off with the key!!! Thanks Larry and everyone else that contributed to my problem!!! Tim
That's great Tim, I was out of suggestions after that. That part of the starter solenoid is defective. It's only supposed to supply 12 volts during cranking, not during run. If you develop any starter problems, you know where to look first. Glad your problem is solved.
