I have a 1966 skylark gs and it has a 1965 LT coded 401 in it. It is mounted with some pieces of angle iron bolted on the motor mounts and the transmission crossmember has some mounts welded to the frame in a different location to where the original mounts are. Is there a difference between the 65 and 66 engines that someone would have to do that much modifying to put the engine in? Thanks, Jim
No, it sounds more like it is a clone? The engine mounts for the GS are cast iron pieces that bolt to the frame and the rubber mounts on the block- the rubber mounts are forward on the block- need pictures...Is your frame "boxed" or open? 65 and 66 are the same mounts. The 66 engine here in cincy has the proper mounts with it. This would be ideal for you. Do you have a 3-speed trannie? that may have come with the LT.
the VIN on the car starts with 44667 and that is supposed to be a gs convertible so I am assuming that it is. Thanks, Jim
The vin is a '66 GS VIN, and the convertible would have the boxed frame anyway. The 65 and 66 GS used the same iron plates, so finding a pair shouldn't be too hard. The motor mounts are a diferent matter, but CARS has a motor mount rebuilding service if you have, or find, a worn out pair. Dan
The car originally had the two speed transmission in it and now it has a three speeed automatic in it. Could that be why the mounts are in a different location? Thanks, Jim
Yep, the 3-speed needs the crossmember back about 1.5 or 2 inches. Your front mounts were probably pitched with the original engine-could happen, all covered with oil and grease they might not look like anything special.
