Wondering what is the best coating used to restore exhaust manifolds? I was thinking powder coating in a cast/ gray color? not sure if it will withstand the heat? I had headers jet hot coated a while back and they had rust spots come thru then pitted. I dont think any high heat paints really work,is it a no win scituation with them?uzzled: Charlie
I don't know how much that stuff shown above is, but Eastwoods cast iron manifold paint worked well and is holding up nice. Didn't break the bank either.
Currently I use the hi temp gray from Eastwood. Lasts a good while and is easy to touch up. The Calyx looks interesting but I've never tried it. I heard you have to reapply it from time to time but depending how long that it is, it might be a better alternative. Looks great in the pics! Supposedly getting them ceramic coated is the cats meow but that is quite a bit more expensive and I don't know anyone who has had it done for more than a year or two so don't know the lengevity of cermaic either. Maybe more folks with actual experience will chime in. http://www.eastwood.com/factory-gray-hi-temp-coating.html http://www.eastwood.com/calyx-manifold-coating.html
Get yourself some Slip Plate. It's a graphite based spray on lubricant. The graphite is unaffected by heat, it's cheap, and it looks like cast iron fresh from the mold. I read about it in an auto rag and that's what we used on my GSX. Looks great and no worries about anything burning off or flaking off, etc.
thanks for the feedback everyone , I think Ill try Slip Plate as I have had a couple more pm's on guys that have used it and said it looks great and holds up great and if worst comes to worst Ill get some Calyx later. Thanks for the link Curtis
Yeah, I tried to cut corners wherever I could on the GSX. It's amazing how much cheaper wall compound is than bondo for covering over all those rust spots! BTW, used the Slip Plate on the master cylinder too. :bla:
I used HPC to ceramic coat my exhaust manifolds and intake. 6 years later, they look like the day they were done.
