    Gary,

Check the passenger side of the intake. This is where the choke mechanism mounts into the intake. Odds are the gasket has deteriorated and you have an exaust leak. Start the car and feel in this area, if it's bad you know right away. The gasket is long since discontinued, you have to make a replacement. Don't use regular gasket material or header gasket material. It will blow out. Get bulk exaust gasket material, metal embossed. Cut it with a shears or dremel to the shape of the cover.

Good luck, I had the same trouble with my '71.

Thanks for the input. Are you sure its the same for 73? Does the exhaust actually go into the area of the choke coil or does it go under it ? I had it apart earlier today but I didnt check for that. There wasnt any kind of gasket under it when I took it off.

I think I had a chevy like that though. 66 chevy with a 283. I cant remember now. That would make sense. Because thats exactly where the sound is coming from. THe passesnger side near the carb.

In the shop manual it shows a pic of the manifold. EGR and passage ways. It does show a passage way fromt he EGR to the choke area, but I dont know if there is actually an opening there. Ill have to open it up again tomorrow and see.

Thanks for the help. if you are sure about the 73 let me know. Thanks.

    Gary,

My '71 & '72 are exactly like that. The earlier 430/400 intakes do not port directly to the exaust gases. I looked at my '76 manifold as well, same thing.

    What about 73?

71 and 72 port to exhaust.. what about 73.. Im going down there in a little while to look. Engine is too hot now I just got home from work. I hope thats it. What else could it be? Its gotta be.

    THanks

    Right ON!

Yea, I took another look. IT is the choke box. At first I didnt see anything in the choke box. Then I realized that it was just a tray that sits in a cavity in the manifold where the exhaust freely enters. There is a gasket on the tray to manifold. And it is thin, old brittle etc. SO that is the problem. Thanks a lot!!

Now on to the solution. You say buy bulk gasket material ? Where can I buy this ? Is it readily available? I have an exhaust manifold gasket can i make it out of that. I think I remember from your other message not to do that. I ll go back and read your previous instructions.

    Thanks again!!

    Gary,

The material can be purchased locally at a Kragen/Checker thru the pro desk. Might try NAPA or Autozone as well. This is the only thing I found to replace the gasket that works. No amount of mechanic words are going to solve this one. High temp gasket goo will just burn up in like 30 seconds, header material will last about 2 minutes.

Just trying to stop you from making my mistakes. If you are having trouble I might still have some left. The piece was 4x6 in size, stiff as metal and a bear to cut. It sure did the job.

    Let me know.

    Jim
