I was told by the guy I bought the car from that since the engine was completely disassembled that I should buy some hardened exhaust valve seats. My question is where exactly do these get placed, under the valve spring or in the combustion area? And are there also valve seats for the intake valves? Please help, first time and dying to get my motor back together. Thanks. :ball: :Do No:

Hardened seats so on the combustion chamber side. A circlular pocket is cut into the seat area, and the seats are pressed in. Then the valve seat suface is cut into the valve seat.
Back in the days of leaded gas, the lead would actually act as a cushion on the exhuast seat. When they switched to unleaded, there was no longer the cushion, and the valve seats would get beaten up. Only the exhuast side is a problem. After 72 or so hardened seats were used in cars.
A buick head is made of high nickel content cast iron, and the need for a hardened seat is not there. I wouldn't worry about it.

i agree, my 160k+ mile heads didn't have any valve recession.

Without the hardened seats does the car knock or anything? If not then I won't worry about it either. I have had a lot of questions putting my motor back together but am enjoying it greatly. I have really learned a lot, mostly from the people on this board. Thanks.
