So things have been going smoothly thus far. We got the engine out and up on a stand... got it cleaned up and getting ready to paint. We only had to take the bolts out of the exhaust manifold that holds the down pipe and we'd be ready to start taking the engine out of the '67. Danged old bolt broke off. :af: I put a putty dam around it and filled it with PB Blaster to soak overnite and we'll try to get the vise grips on it tomorrow.... in the meantime does anyone have any other suggestions??

Might be best to let machine shop get them out. The harder you try the more will break.

If you are familiar with using a torch and only IF . Heat up the area where the bolt is broken off , have a regular wax candle handy and after the manifold gets hot enough melt some wax onto the broken bolt . the melted wax will act as a lubricant to help the bolt come out .

If you heat it with a torch, start slowly. Is there enough sticking out to cut a screw driver slot in it????

leave the manafold on the head or you might have to remove some broken bolts out of the head also.

get a picture of the other side of the manafold where the bolt broke.

I just saw an advertisement on TV for a stripped screw head/broken bolt remover. 19.99 +s/h gauranteed to work or money back - yada yada yada.
It's called the GRABIT. It has a frog with a screw in its tongue (like a fly) as a logo.

Well..... we tried about everything today and nothing worked. Yesterday while I was out getting "stuff" I picked up a set of "bolt getter outters" lol Looks like a socket with radical reverse threads? We used that to get the exhaust manifolds off and took them to the local machine shop. That guy had it out in no time flat. I need to get new bolts for the manifolds.

The engine is now painted so beginning next week we'll start taking the motor out of the '67!!!

When I used to work in a muffler shop we would heat the ear of the manifold up if the stud looked iffy. When it turned orange we'd use an impact socket & wrench with a nut or two in the socket and run it backwards and they'd usually spin right out. I even got good enough to remove broken and pencil lead thin studs with pliers after heating the manifold up.

This really works well, the other is to set the head on a good drill press, file off the bolt flat, "ABSOLUTE" center punch em' and start drilling it out going from small to big until you can see the threads start to come out, then just tap em'.

Thats what I usually end up doing if the heat does not work the first time or two . If you are very careful its probablythe best way .
