    Hi,

I installed a MSD 6AL and am now experiencing what they call "run on". The car keeps running after the key is shut off. I found the instructions in the manual about installing a diode in the #4 wire off the voltage regulator to correct this.

I see it's the brown wire coming off of that. My question is, what does this diode look like?? I can't seem to find it in the bag that came with the MSD uit? Can someone post a pic of what it looks like, preferably installed? Thanks.

If I don't have it, can I buy one at Radio Shack? Thanks.

    Phil

    Yep

Phillip, I got mine at Radio Shack for about .50.

    Phil,
This is a picture of a diode. It allows electricity to flow in only one direction. They have to be installed in the proper direction. If you have an ohmeter, you can check the resistance in both directions. One way will have high resistance, the other way, low resistance. There is a way to tell by looking at them, but I forget. Something to do with the line on them. Check with the ignitionman, I'm sure he would know. It's very small, so you may have missed it. I'm sure if you went to your local Radio Shack, and told them what you wanted to use it for, they could supply the right one. Or call the MSD hotline. Hope that helps.

OK, so how am I supposed to install that in that brown wire????

I thought this would be a simple splice and plug-in, like a fuse. Guess I was wrong.

I don't have one of those in my kit. I'll have to call MSD today and see if they'll send me one.....and some bette instructions of how to put it in.

1Amp, 600V diode from Radio Shack. The end with the band on it goes toward the alternator. I just cut the wire and soldered the ends to the diode, then put shrink tube over the whole thing.

Uh oh; soldering. Never did that before. Fluxing, tinning, blah, blah, blah. Guess it's off to Glen's house for this repair.

Diode listed in the MSD instructions says 1A-100V. I'm assuming this is a 100 volt. Does the voltage make a difference?

OK, 100V. I was citing from memory as I had to do it with my car about a month ago. I might have got a 600V because that was what Radio Shack was selling. $0.89 ea or something like that.

Because I'm on the net in the town I work in, nad My cars are in another town where I can't get on the net easily, I seldom have the luxury of going to the garage to look, then getting back to someone. I hope that much help is better than none at all.

I wasn't criticizing anyone. Just don't want to screw things up. I talked to MSD and they said a 400V would be fine.

    Phil,

Buy a soldering iron kit, with Rosin core solder, and it's a snap..

Heat the joint from one side, and apply the solder from the other until it just melts. Electrical soldering is very easy to do, and it's not like jewlery work, where you have to flux, tin, and all that fun stuff..

Use some heat shrink over your finished, soldered connection, for a lifetime

After you get the MSD diode in, go back and solder every connection in the car, if it was made with those dang blue scotch locks..

Trust me on this one, you won't regret it..

I didn't use their connectors. I got some male/female ones from the guys at Technical Services in the city I work for. I didn't waterproof the connections, but the only time the car gets wet is when I wash it.

No offense taken Phil. I feel bad when I don't give info that's right on the money without remembering to say whether I'm positive about its accuracy or not.

Oh, and don't forget to put the heat-shrink on the wire before you get both ends soldered (speaking from experieince :Dou: )
