just a quick question...did any of the gbody(78-87) regals come factory with a big block ...factory option thanks in advance Edit/Delete Message
figured that much...sure they were in the a-bodies though ..but do u think a 400 would fit nicely in our g-bodies as the 455 seems a lil too tight for comfort lol
A 400 CI SBB would fit pretty nice and snug probably, but a 455 would need a little(or alot) of mods for comfort, ex.might need to move firewall back a bit, etc.
A 400 CI SBB would fit pretty nice and snug probably there is no such animal (small block) from the factory. the 400, 430 and 455 are all basically the same block with different bore diameters. they can even share heads and cranks between all of these engines. the 350 small block might be a little bit shorter front to rear (much smaller bores) but the deck height is almost the same height as on the big blocks. check the numbers. this is what makes it so difficult to tell the difference between a SBB and BBB engine. Code: connecting stroke rod 455 3.900 6.600 (the 400 has the same dimensions) 350 3.850 6.358 you've got .192" difference there. as to the original question: buicks ceased BB production in 76, so there are NO buick big blocks in ANY car from 77 on. dates of production 400 and 430 = 1967-1969 455 = 1970-1976 350 = 1968-1980(?) prior to these years the big blocks were nail heads and small blocks were the 340/300 series. i have seen talk of a 400ci engine in the 1975 buicks but these were supposed to be pontiac engines in california cars. however, it seems that noone has ever actually seen such a beast so they may have been planned and never made it into production. now they just exist in records to screw with our heads.
I think I've read in my 1970 assembly manual (not sure where) about some 70 models coming with a 400. Of course that would be a Buick motor. Its interesting what happened at the factory back in the day. The wierdest thing I've ever seen is my uncles 79 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4 with a 73 LT-1. Gotta use up those extra parts from the previous years.
you could have gotten every v8 motor GM offered from 78-87 depending on the year you can use any Chevy v8 by using Chevy mounts, any Pontiac v8 by using 301 mounts(offered in the Regal 79-80)any Olds v8 by using 260/307 mounts(260 offered 78 307 86-87)350 Buick will bolt in by using the 231 v6 mounts all of these are bolt in swaps.I had a 455 Buick in my 79 Regal it bolted in by using 70 GS mounts with no problems.I do not know who made the mounts they were purchased from the parts store and actually bolted in? I have not heard of anyone else having such luck. forgot to add that a 500 Caddy will fit using mounts available from a company that advertises in the back of Hot Rod just make sure that you use Eldorado exhaust manifolds and oil pan so you have plenty of options its personal preferance or the amount of $$ you have to spend good luck
