Got some time here on the road and the board is a little slow. I thought I would throw this out to those that race at the PSMCDR's or strive for better performance within the stock relm. If you could of had the factory change a part, barrowed from the parts bin what would it be????

For myself it would be the L-72 high rise intake. I think the LS-6 would react well to the intake. I think it would gain some stronger numbers and issolate the carb from all the heat better.

The aluminum L-89 heads would of been neat as well but, secondary on the list. 50 pounds off the nose would help the car in the first 1/8th. Oh well, I can only dream.

    163 high rise

I have to agree -THAT would be the one at the TOP of my list. MY Ls6 is done at 6000 to 6200 no reason to spin any more than that. The high rise would help at least another 500 rpm. Then maybe some vette manifolds - and a new roller cam, a 850 carb- and wala I'm in FAST.

Not a thing. Already had everything I needed at the time! Well, maybe a steeper gear set (mine was a 3.91)

A bit of extra compression on the RA IV along with the 800 cfm q-jet would make it about perfect for me. Oh yeah allow me to drop it into a much lighter T-37 or Formula. No need for the 455 cubes everyone talks about, 400 seem to be just fine for the stock heads.

Bigger carbs for my AMC's. Those tiny holes in the carters/autolites are making them sip through 4 straws. Dogleg heads all around from '68 and on and "the machine" intake for everything also. The machine intake weights more than an R4B Edelbrock but they flow better in my testing. Type two cams spread around like std's at a Vikings boat ride would help also.

    Hold Up

Not much Bruno, just the motor, body and assembly. Take that back just the motor and assembly the body has been done for to long.

    Vacuum Operated Exhaust ("VOE")

58buickspecial: VOE was a factory option on 1970 GTO's from about November 1969 through January 1970. The excerpt I quoted above is from the only TV commercial about the option. It aired during the Superbowl in 1970. GM brass blew a gasket when the saw the ad and immediately cancelled the feature. A free download copy is available on the internet (but I don't remember where). The system utilized an underdash vacuum pull cable system (like ram air) that opened a short-cut through the mufflers. Pull the cable, and... = straight-thru exhaust. It was loud and totally cool! There's a guy reproducing them right now in limited quantities. That said, there's no evidence the system would amount to a performance advantage in P/S racing.

    Talking VOE!!!

A gentlemen here in Kansas City by the name of Tom Hand-- you Poncho guys know who I am talking about-- is reproducing these mufflers in small orders. He has it set up with vaccum operation, but they sound like the originals. He has run dyno test with them and shows a very slight increase (if my memory serves me correct) in horsepower, just a lot louder!!! :bglasses:

    its all about the presentation!

Louder is better! Cops around here luv when I crack the tubes open on the hemi sport fury or the 61 cat.
They'll point and give thumbs up and immediately pull over a civic or subaru and write him up for pollution device violation.

    The Humbler

    Humbler Commercial

For those of you who might be interested in viewing the "Humbler" commercial from the January 1970 airing at the Superbowl. Just click above on the link. I still get tingles... it is one very cool commercial!

That is very cool. I recall the cruising through the drive-ins many years ago. This was even before McDonald's! One friend got so many tickets in his 32 coupe, that his dad removed the driveshaft to keep him from getting more. He used to tow it up to Scotty's drive-in, (Springfield, Pa.) in the afternoon and park it for the evening. He'd catch a ride up later, hang out in it, start it up and rev it every so often (sounded great), then wait 'til everybody left, and tow it home. Did it all one summer.

Another trick that was used was to install a manual choke, and pull it out just to the point of killing the engine when you rumbled through. Too much.
