Factory radio mounting brackets

I am trying to install an original factory radio in my '71 GS, but have no idea how it mounts. I can only conclude that some parts are missing. Can anyone help explain how the radio mounts? Any of you guys with aftermarket stereos be willing to sell your old brackets?

    Darrin,
Has your Skylark had an "aftermarket" radio in it before? It may be possible that the "mounting tabs" may have been removed, making it almost impossible to reinstall the "factory" radio. It can be done, though, but that's usually what happens when you buy these cars from "kids", or just "amateurs" who try to "improve"ithings while it's "their" car, but usually they end up doing more harm than good (for the car, and making it more difficult for the next owner to "undo" what they have done, and THEN "redo" it the "correct" way"). That has been MY experience, anyway, to undo someone elses way, and do it my way.
With the radio bezel removed, and just the dash opening visible, there are 2 "tabs" on the lower lip edge of the opening. These 2 tabs are the "mounting" tabs for the original radios. When you install the radio in the dash, from behind, there are 2 studs that go into the 2 tabs, and put the nuts on them from the front, to hold the radio in place. To the Left Rear (side) of the radio, there is also a Support Bracket that mounts to the Dash Frame with a 10 mm screw (actually, it's a standard, but the 10mm works well). Then the bezel goes on. If the tabs happen to be "gone", I don't know what to tell you, besides "don't worry about it, and keep your aftermarket radio in there, anyway). I don't understand why so many guys actually WANT a 30 year old radio in their car, when it's so much better with "CD Quality" sound. To each, his own. I hope this helps, maybe. I'll check back to see, or you can Email me if I can help by clarifying anything.

I just looked and I think the tabs are still there. They are approx. 1/2"x1" and are part of the dash itself, not a separate piece. The left rear bracket is there also. So if I understand you I need two studs which hold up the radio in front. How long(tall) are they? How do they attach to the radio. How does the left rear bracket attach to the radio? I tried to line it up with the radio and none of the existing holes seemed to line up. Thanks for your help. If I can get a clear picture of what I need I'm sure some of the fab guys at work can make me what I need.

    Darren,
The stock radios have a stud on each side that comes straight out of the front face of the radio. The bracket on the bottom is an "L" bracket, one hole mounts to the bottom of the radio, the other mounts to a vertical support to the left of the radio. Alot of guys bend the tabs on the dash down so the aftermarket radios lay flat in the opening, make sure they they are up, so that the studs can fit straight into them. It is easiest to remove the glove box liner and install the radio from behind like Scott said. If the studs on the radio are missing you shoud see two holes where they should be, you may be able to thread a screw with the head cut off in there. Good Luck.

    Darren,
This piece was in my car. I have no idea if it's factory or not, but the bottom holes had a screw going through the tabs mentioned in the posts above and it held the old radio secure.

You may have to click on the link. I have the img tags set up, but I don't see a picture. My new isp may not allow links to images. If you still can't see it, send me an email and I will send you a pic.

Thanks, Larry, for explaining a little better than I did. It is sometimes difficult to explain "procedures" in writing, rather than speaking, but I try.:TU:
Yes, Darren, I should have mentioned that the tabs are usually bent down when an aftermarket radio is installed, sorry. I just know my cars so well, from "working" on them, everything just seems automatic to me, but I'm not always clear to explain to others who don't do this as often.
Be careful when you bend the tabs back up, too. Bend them up SLOWLY, as they may be prone to breaking off easily. A pair of pliers or vice grips will work, and it shouldn't take much effort at all to bend them back up, either. Once they are up, install the radio from the rear so the studs come through the tabs, and install the 2 nuts. The "L" bracket mounts on the bottom Left Rear of the radio with one screw, and then to the Dash Frame with one screw, to support the rear of the radio. It does not take too long to remove/install, just have a little patience so you don't break anything. If you start getting frustrated, leave it alone, and finish it when you calm down (trust me, I've been there, especially with the A/C vent tube behind the radio!). Let us know how it turns out!:TU:

    Hi Scott,
I figured the tabs were bent down, seen that so many times including my 70. Glad to help:TU:

Thanks for the advice guys, my only concern now is finding the right size studs. Any idea what length or thread size they are? Installing it should be fairly easy since my dash is currently disassembled, no glove box or AC ducts to contend with. Thanks again for your help!
