I would find it strange for it to disappear for one year and then appear in 72. Maybe they used a different fan clutch to put the fan deeper in the shroud in 71????????
Shroud Loop It was my understanding that the loop on the '72 455 shroud was to help keep the hose away from the air pump pulley. Since '71 does not have an air pump, it should not have a loop. The original shroud on my '71 does not have the loop. Thanks, Ken
71 shroud does NOT have a hole, hence no upper hose support. Kenbuick is correct in his assesment. 71's no hole, no loop. 72's has hole and has loop. Have a loop on your 71 and enter concours judging? Lose a point for wrong support/shroud.
So, for the sake of everyone's education, why does a 70 have a hook, from the engineering point-of-view? And, does 69 have a hose hook? I've seen many both ways.
Looking thru the papers here on this car, it had a wreck and was replaced so this one has been installed
Olds supplier I have bought some A body repro brake lines fro this guy and he has a Buick specific 1970 specific fan shroud listed at 159.00 . Just wanted to know if he was reselling TPP parts .http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4629299469
Hmmmmmmmmmmm, where is that genie in the bottle?????? Oh, let's see..............Oh Duane, where are you hiding????????? Need to get the info on why 70 would have the hook and then 71 not have. Did the fan size change? Did they change the fan clutch?? Did they change the upper hose design???? o No:
George, I didn't design the things, but........ In 71 they changed the pulleys, water pump, engine accessory brackets, as well as the fan (# of blades and diameter). So I guess that is why they had to change the fan shroud. They also changed at least the upper radiator hose, so the routing did not need the hook. For 72 everything basically remained the same as 71, but because of the air pump, a strap was needed to keep the upper hose where they wanted it. And, even though the fan shroud retained the same shape, it was altered by having the hole for the strap put in it, therefore it had a new part number. Do I get an "A"? Duane PS. I was certain that Brad knew this answer because when his Dad first put the 71 Black GSX together they used an NOS (72) fan shroud and I knocked 1 point off the car. I nailed him another point for his NOS (72) driverside inner fender. You should have seen how mad his Dad was at me. Trust me when you come to my corner of the world (Concours Judging), there are no friends. Right is right and wrong is wrong, and that's it. Sorry to take this thread off course, but George asked.
Duane gets an A (AWESOME) as usual. :TU: Good thing we are not in class, Duane would destroy the entire "curve" for the class. Brad??? Who?????
The thing I have noticed is that with the hoses now they aren't always 100% correct so you have to be careful and route them so they stay out of the fan. On my 71 there is about a 1/4" clearance, kinda freaky but when hot the hose gets pretty solid but a strap would have been nice anyway. later Tim
