    Hi Matt,
I didn't see any reason to post the link, as I know we all cruise ebay and pretty much see all there is for our individual cars that need parts. I've been looking high and low for one of these, as some jackass replaced the original in my convertible with a Hurst, and tossed the console. The car is original down to the paint and hoses, but for that danged Hurst. I've been slowly piecing what I need, and once I have it all, will be ready to pull it off the frame. I only need to find the correct shifter boot, reverse switch bracket and a nice tach cup. Wish me luck! Dan

Dan, does the reverse switch have a wire "linkage" that operates it? I've got some kind or reverse switch that is on a bracket that has a wire linkage coming off of the acutuator arm.Let me know.

Dan It doesn't look the shift arms come with the shifter?

I've got several sets of shifter arms, so I'm not worried about it.
Bill, I do need the reverse switch bracket and rod(it looks like a carb linkage rod). How much would you like for it? I have 4 or five NOS watershields that screw onto the bracket. I'll give my extras up to the needy along with my two 65 Shifters and extra rods once I get my car setup right, without the Hurst Indy (don't get me started on Hurst again!!!). Thanks, Dan

Well, some guy named Buick Creature outbid me with a few minutes to spare. He acts like a creature that lives in the slime under rocks. As bad as I needed that part, if he's a member of this board, it was a rotten thing to do. :moonu: :af: I'm going to keep an eye out for him.Dan

The only way to get anything good off Ebay is to sit there to the end and keep refreshing the page to make sure you don't get outbid. Sorry Dan

Dan Maybe the guy bid the price up himself it happened to me on a 66 bumper, then he e-mailed me saying he had another and would let me have it for my bid. By the way I'm the orginal owner of a 66GS 4 speed and I removed the orginal shifter after about 18 months it was a piece of junk.

    So here's what i don't get about e-Bay:

In a normal auction, you bid until you're the high bidder, the auctioneer says "going once, going twice, fair notice, sold" or whatever. Then the item is yours if no one else chimes in.

Now if someone decides to bid at the last minute after the auctioneer says "going once", he does the whole bidding shpiel again and then goes through the "going once, ..." thing again.

Now imagine the pandemonium at an auction house if the auctions were time based. Everyone would chime in at the end right as he's ending the auction. "going once, going twice, fair notice.. "$300!" "$325!" "$350!" "SOLD!". It would be insane.

Basically, the idea of an auction is to maximize the seller's return. The e-Bay method doesn't do that. How hard would it be for e-Bay to change their set-up so that any bid in the last 5 minutes would automatically add 5 minutes to the auction? That way no one gets outbid due to computer vagaries or access problems, the seller gets maximum return, no bad karma from getting screwed at the last second. Seems like a pretty simple and logical change to me.

Or is the "let's see if I can screw someone" thing half the attraction of e-Bay in the first place?

I appreciate the sentiments. Chas, the 4speed in my hardtop is original, and is the smoothest, slickest shifter I've ever seen. Bang, bang, bang! I've never done a thing to it, but is has never even burped. Chris,
I did try that on this one, but at least I made him pay a lot more than he expected. I bid it up to 330 in a last desperate attempt.
I agree wholeheartedly about the ebay paradox. Surprisingly, ebay is on record as supporting sniping, and even has a service you can use to snipe all of your auctions in the last seconds. There was an auction site called Cityauction some time back that used the 5 minute idea, and some of the auctions went on for an hour past the end. Ebay knows about the idea, but for some reason isn't responsive to it's customers or sellers. Unfortunately, it's by far the best game in town, so I guess I'll keep looking. Dan

    Dan,

If you are opposed to sniping, then try this method.

Figure you aren't going to get a "great deal" on the part, even though the bidding may be really low still. Calculate the most you would be willing to pay for the item. Now add 10%. If you really want it bad, add 20%.

Near the end of the auction, place your bid at the amount calculated above. The bidding will only get to that amount if someone else bids that high (even though that "someone" might be the owner). By placing your bid near the end, you probably minimixe the chance the owner will run it up, as he doesn't want to outbid you and not give you a chance to get back in (assuming he really wants to sell the item).

If you don't win, you won't feel so bad, because you wouldn't have wanted the item at that price anyway (if you would have, you weren't honest in the first step "calculate the most you would pay").

If you win, you get your item. You may have paid 10% more than you wanted to (maybe even 20%), but you got it, and in the long run you will be glad you did. Cut back somewhere else for the next month and make it up. Don't go out to lunch at work for week, bring if from home. Skip the morning Latte. Cut back on cigarettes for a couple of weeks (or forever if you are a smoker, you will live longer:) ), what ever your spending "vice" is.

    Just my .02.

Excellent advice!I don't bid till less than 5 minutes from the end of the auction. That way the snipers don't have as much time to feel out you max bid.....but remember,if you WANT the part then BID like it.There are a lot of snipers out there and i think there are more than a few who do it just to mess with people.I just think of the sad pathetic life they must live to get pleasure in that type of behavior.
    Peace on Earth WildBill
