Ken....I feel your pain!....I was hesitant to pull the body off my '66 4 speed car, but in reality, that's the best way to do it! There's no turning back now!

Frame paint.....I agree.....sandblast, fill any pitted areas, prime with epoxy AND finish paint with epoxy.....

IF the frame is unpitted, you can powdercoat. It's MUCH less labor intensive than painting! Expect to pay $150-300 fo pc'ing.

JW has a thread here 'somewhere'....recommended an epoxy paint from:

    Viking Paints Inc
    100 W 78th ST
    Richfield, MN 55423

    Phone (612) 866-1212

Brand is Tennaco #900 black . You can purchase a gloss hardener, and a satin hardener to vary the gloss levels. It's a nice product, and much easier to mix then conventional urethanes with flatting agents.
They also offer a nice epoxy primer.....

My projects are currently in hibernation.... I need a bigger garage!!

Nope we spray it right over the urethane preferably when it is still wet.

    I have confidence in Ken - It'll be ready for Salem......2008 ??? 2010 ??

Seriously - I applaud your efforts and commitment to your "X". I only wish I had gone this far when I "Freshened" mine in 1998. Now, its just gonna have to be done again someday.....

Very True words my Friend :TU: :beer :TU:

Thanks Walt. I actually acquired some of this paint already from JW. I'll search for the thread on ratios, but I think it may be lost! I think the only real pitting I'll have on the frame is the passenger front from battery acid. On the driver's side rear wheel arch there's still remnants of a paper tag that must have been affixed to the frame from the factory to give you an idea what she looks like in terms of shape. :Brow: Anyone know what that tag originally read?

My '66 had remnants also....it was a two-letter code for the frame. That info should be in the assembly manual....

Ken, did you rent a crane to pull the body off of the frame? Did you do it inside? Don't know if I should pull mine off or not!

    Thanks.

    Anthony-

I borrowed a cherry picker from work and did the work in the garage in the place it shows in the picture. I made sure i got the body up just high enough to be able to roll the frame out from under it.

The best advice I can give you is to take your time and be safe. Make sure you think it through before you start. Don't put any part of your body between the body and the frame while your lifting it. Make double sure you have everything disconnected before you start lifting it.

That is too cool. Your father is probably thrilled with the restoration. I lifted my body the same way. once I got my body up on the jackstands I didn't have the nads to open the doors though. which was ok since I didn't need to. :Do No: I was also suprized how easy it was too. Heck, I did it my self, probably took around 10 hours to do, but I did my from a fully assembled car. have everything on the frame exactly as you want it before you drop it, otherwise you'll kick yourself later. Looking good!

Thanks for the encouragement guys! Johnno/Kevin, massholes are welcome anytime. It's only a couple of hour to here! My dad passed away last May and part of me doing this car is a tribute to him. When I started this, he told me of a lot of plans he had for he and I once it was done, including going to see the original owner he bought it from when it was 6 months old. His cancer was faster than my resto speed. :( That being said, I'm sure he's thrilled in the big house in the sky and is watching! :TU: :)

Joe, I hear you on the frame. I plan to reinstall as much as possible, whole drivetrain included, before the body goes back on.

Ken, he's watching, he sees and he's smiling.

Kevin, on Saturday I got a 10 hour, uninterrupted thrash completed and on Sunday it was a 6 hour thrash. The interior is all done now except for the installation of the seat covers - which Duane Heckman (the upholsterer of the GSX prototype) will do for me after he picks up all my gear on Thursday. The headliner, visors, and carpet are new. The seatbelts are used and I redyed them and they look brand new. The metal part of the dashboard was repainted. The A-pillar covers and dashpad were dyed black to match the new interior color. The door panels were dyed black to match. The seat belt retractor covers and the package shelf were painted black to match.

I am having the driver's door armrest (it runs the full length of the door) recovered with a "Just Dashes" type of heat shrink/vacuum covered vinyl cover because it was all cracked and broken. When it is done it will look brand new from windshield to rear window. I had to locate missing upholstery buttons which set me back a week, but board member Skymangs came through for me. Also when the upholsterer spread open my pristine visor hinges to extricate the visors, he broke BOTH of them! And an ROA member Clair McClean provided me with a set of hinges that cleaned up real nice.

I'm still on the lookout for another set of door panels because my endless doses of vinyl preservative to keep these pliable has rendered them unstable with respect to the adherence of the dye. So in time it will all work out.

    For now, it looks MAHVAHLOUS!!!

LOL Carl, good talking to you at lunch today!

Speaking of lunch, I went and loaded up a rotisserie into the back of my Avalanche. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:

The guy that I got it from was pretty cool. The only problem was when I told him what kind of car, he shook his head and said "Too bad it isn't a Chevelle...." :af: :moonu:

Oh well, the uninitiated in the world.... :)

Good talking to you too, Ken! Glad you got that rotisserie taken care of. As for that guy at the shop-he will never know that the GS was a far superior car than the Chevelle. Of course,we know that!!!

    Alan-

I couldn't find it on the web, but I remember seeing on TV a while back a show on BBQ that featured a smoker made out of a datsun 240Z. When you opened the doors, trays were attached that held savory meats. Hmmm, a GSX meat smoker......
