It's taken a few weeks, but I finally finished installing my nitrous setup. It would have been done a helluva lot sooner but one thing lead to another, and now the engine and accessories are repainted, among other things. I started with an NOS kit, essentially their Powershot kit without the non-adjustable plate. I ordered an Edelbrock plate that included the jetting I was after, and pieced everything together. I also ditched the factory mechanical fuel pump and installed an electric competition pump from Carter. Instead of using their WOT microswitch to activate the system, I'm using a momentary switch mounted on the Hurst floor shifter. I'll eventually have to relocate that to the steering wheel, because I can't spray, drive, and switch between high and low stall at the strip. I'm running Edelbrock's "75" shot, which depending upon who you ask, should be ~90hp at the crank. I pulled 3* of timing. Plug ground straps look good, although I could probably pull another degree. No signs of detonation, and the AFR looks a hair rich, which is a good thing. I'm also running a step colder plug, NGK 2746's. I have to say, nitrous is a riot. :Brow: Got the bottle filled! I was expecting $6/lbs, but apparently prices sky rocketed over the summer, and local guys were quoting $9/lbs by next season? Finished! And finally the one video I've taken thus far! Crappy I know. This was brake stalling it and hitting the go-go juice once I hit WOT. Up in smoke! Even in crappy air this setup should propel me into the 13's based on what I ran last year. If I feel gutsy, I do have jets for a "100" shot, which is probably 115hp or so at the crank, but I'm not sure I want to push my luck.
Hah, that's why I sent you the vid first! For those that are curious, ET and MPH said about 320hp NA at the crank, assuming 18% drivetrain loss in full street trim. I think the DA was a little over 2000ft during those runs. As it'll run next year with nitrous, ~410hp/~600ft lbs tq.
Jeez, making all that noise I thought you would go faster than 20mph :eek2::laugh:. Was that hitting a 6 on the tach? Have fun with it Andy... a little juice never hurt no body no ways :3gears:.
If it was definitely a rush! Lol that's exactly what my buddy said when I sent him the vid! The spedo hasn't worked for a few years since a killer burnout rendered it useless. It hit just over 5k on the tach and hung out there until it finally hooked up. Power has always seemed to fall off over 5k, I always attributed that to a lack of head work.
Atleast it went out with an interesting story. I couldn't read the numbers and I just guessed your 'redline' on the tach was set somewhere past 5, then saw the needle jump past that. I don't remember what your bottom end setup is; but with enough juice and different cam you could probably see past 6k atleast once while on one heck of a ride :Brow::laugh:. In all seriousness though, great looking install, car, engine bay, and thanks for sharing that AWSOME video :TU:.
Rpm window switch is a much better/easier way to activate the gas imo, Summit has their house brand that is cheap and easy to wire
I'd say a hair rich is certainly better than lean. A window switch is a good suggestion. I just wanted to get the kit in and working before the winter. I'll probably revisit that idea in the spring.
Not gonna lie, I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more attention. I can't think of anybody spraying a Nailhead, besides Roger (I think) who was building the custom intake with a hidden fogger setup. What's up, does this crowd just not like nitrous? I was pushing an 871 BDS blower, but my wife wasn't having any of that...
I hope to be joining you this coming year Andy, and I think it's cool as hell! But I'm just a young guy with very little money :bla: . If Roger is fabing one up could someone direct me to some pictures, a thread, anything really. And on convincing the wife just keep working at it... she'll give in eventually :Brow:.
Thanks Matt! I'm a young guy too, only 22, so budget friendly was definitely a goal. I'm in my whole setup, fuel pump and full bottle included, for just about $500. Shoot me a PM, I'd love to chat more about your plans. I don't even remember how long ago I saw the thread, but if I remember correctly, it was a dual quad intake with hidden fogger nozzles in the runners. Very trick and a very cool setup. If the funds are there, that's definitely the way to go.
Don't be afraid of hitting it with a 150shot. Just make sure you are watching afr and not a bad idea of a 02monitering system to play it safe... I don't think ur putting down enough power yet but any issues with the st300 converter? What does it stall at?
It's a V6 ST300 converter. It flashes to 2800-3000rpms. Very loose driving around in high stall, very tight driving around in low stall. Works pretty well and launches hard.
Stock replacements as far as I'm aware. The engine was rebuilt in '98 or '99 and the paperwork has been lost over the years, so I don't really know.
Andy - been following this thread very closely..... is the season over in MN? If not, we want numbers! Good luck and don't go lean!
Thanks again for hooking me up with the converter Kevin! It was an awesome upgrade over the stock ST400 converter. Unfortunately the season is over for me. I might hit up a test 'n tune early next year, other wise I don't have any plans to hit the strip until mid-late August, for the same event I went to this year.
