    We're working on a '72 GS 455, 4sp convertible, from the cowl/firewall forward. Behind the voltage regulator, we can clearly see a 4, an 8, and what could be a 6 or B? Also behind the brake booster, we have a D, and C. Any ideas about the 48?? Another marking is on the radiator top plate, on the opposite end from the radiator cap area, in yellow marking. It's -10. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks for your help, Joe X.

    Let me take a stab

    Behind the brake booster
    D = disc brake
    C = Clutch

    Radiator marking
    -10 (antifreeze strength) this is just a guess.

    No clue on the other two numbers/letters.

    Joe,
    What are the lower/upper colors of the car? _______, with a black top?
    Duane

    PS. The -10 was probably put on by a past owner.

    Firewall Markings

    Joe

    Just removed complete front end of my 71 GS350 with 4 speed. I found marking between the heater box and voltage regulater numbered 53 over 19. These numbers match my metal ID tag on the top of the firewall. My colors are cortez gold with black painted top which correspond with the numbers. I do have a photo if interested. I will be replacing the markings when completed. Hope this helped.

    Thanks for the replies Mike, Duane, and George. Duane, the cars color is Hunter Green (code 48), and the convertible top was originally black, but sometime before 1987, was changed to white. There also is a letter B, on the body tag, just past the PNT 48. Sounds like the firewall should be 48B. What type/color marker do you use Duane? The -10 on the radiator top sure looks to be from the factory, as it looks to be made with a yellow marker, very similar to the DC behind the booster. Could this cars coolant have been randomly checked, on, or at the end of the line? I'll post a photo of it here, before the top gets restored. Thanks again guys, Joe X.

    Joe,
    The numbers would be "48 B" for a Hunter Green car with a black convertible top.
    I think Carl R or Ken Lisk had a thread going about the crayons they used for the firewall. I teased them and said I used Crayola. I think the consensus was that either a tire crayon or a welding crayon would work. Maybe one of those guys can chime in.

    As far as the "-10" on the rad cover, I have seen everything from paper decals from garages, to crayon, and ever numbers painted on the covers for timing and antifreeze temp. All appear to be non-original to the cars. When delivered new the cars only had 2 different antifreeze temps, 1 for US delivered cars and another for Canada and possibly other export countries.

    Thanx Duane for helping out, we appreciate it. Did Fisher Body paint the firewalls black, after painting the body color, and add each cars markings? Or was this done by an assembly line worker? Hey George, can you post some photos from your car here? A painted top must be very rare. Joe X.

    Thanks for asking for a photo of my GS, but don't know how to post. I have own my GS now for 20 years and it's now being restored with a frame off by myself. It's all 100% original with the exception of the tires of course. The few options on my GS350 includes am/fm radio, 8-track, 4 speed, bench seat, power steering and black painted steel top that's it! The paint is all original and only has 62,000 miles and almost 100% rust free!!!!

    George, we'll have to see if someone here can help out with your photos. Our cars seem to be somewhat similar. Mine, was originally a Cortez Gold GS 350, with not many options. Black bench w/armrest seat interior, black vinyl top, sport mirrors, and rare am/fm stereo radio. It was painted yellow when I bought it in 1998, and is now back to at least the original color. Joe X.

    Finally remembered to bring the camera today. Here's a photo of the radiator top, with the -10 mark, and some other markings. This car has not been touched, under the hood, for at least 20 years. Duane, what do you think? Joe X.
