Fixed, but what was the problem?

I had a driveability problem with my '68. I fixed it but I did three things at once, so I'm not sure what really fixed it! What do you guys think?

    Problem:
Car chugged at about 1500 rpm in first gear.
Surge at cruise. Smoothed out at about 60 mph but started up again by 70.
    Down on power.
    Rough idle.

    Fixes:
    1. Replaced worn distributor gear.
    2. Re-checked cam phasing and found it 4 degrees retarded. Set the Rollmaster to 4 degrees advanced, ended up within 1/2 degree of recommended intake lobe center.
    3. Realized that I had suppressor wires AND plugs. Went to non-suppressor type plugs.

The power is back, and I'm ready for Salem (I hope).

I would rule out the cam if this problem just ocurred, but the cam had been 4* retarded for a while

I would also rule out the plug wires and plugs if the problem just ocurred and you had those plugs and wires for a while

which means the onlt one I can't rule out is distributor gear
