I'm running into fender to door Alignment problems on my son's 70.

We are replacing the front sheet metal, the rad support & support bushings (TWE's GM A body units), and now are having difficulty in lining up everything. To the best of my knowledge the rad support is straight and the tolerance on the mounting holes is as per factory.

Can someone recommend the best procedure for aligning sheet metal from the doors forward.

Anyone give me a starting point. Tighten top fender bolt first /pillar bolt? Whats next? Getting the correct rad support height and position to the fender?

I'm starting with pieces from all different vehicles, and my attemps so far are frustrating on this one.
    Help needed.

Re Camaro thread on panel alignment

    Brian,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. There were some excellent alignment tips and procedures on that Camaro thread.

I've been working on this project part time, but so far have everything together minus the hood latches, and the items in front of the rad support (Grille bumper etc.).

I went back to square one, and made sure the rad support was square and centered to the frame. Then shimmed up of the new TWE Chevelle bushings to get the support height correct. I suspected they were a little low after a trial fitting for fan to shroud interference. (and they were)

The passenger fender finished up nicely and aligns up pretty well and now I need to tweak the driver side.
I ran out of daylight last night, so the driver's fender is secured in place, at the cowl, door post, firewall, heel and rad support with a semi loose inner fender. It looks Like I need to close the door gap (it is even, but a little wider than I like) and there's a hollow betwen the crease and radius. I'll be at it again tonight.

I didn't answer the question on the rad support, to tell you the truth, I don't worry about it at all until the fenders are mounted. The rad support has no real alignment "powers" other than up and down and side to side of the WHOLE front of the clip. So, I bolt both front fenders in, align them at the rear "temporaraly" Then try to get everything up front "squared".

The hood needs to be on, the fenders need be on, BEFORE you can do much with the rad support. At the point you have the tops of the fenders at the rear tight (though they will probably be moved a little later) you can move the rad support side to side to square up the hood opening. All the while you are probably moving the hood a little here and there, loosing the bolts, moving the hood and retightening the bolts. This is VERY common so don't let it bug you that you have to move something you thought was good.

Great information. These are exactly the kind of tips we are all looking for.
