I haven’t been up under this part of the dash for a while. I’m going to install the flat pancake 4” x 10” upper Dash speaker. It looks like it has four mounting holes and a few other mounting tabs coming off of it.

Is there any additional hardware I need or does it just mount into an existing frame that is up underneath the dish grill slots? Could it be that easy? .Thanks for your input!

I am pretty sure that an aftermarket 4 X 10" speaker that mounts with 4 holes is not the same as what originally came in our cars. To mount it that way, you may need to drill holes and use screws/nuts. That won't be easy given the confines under the dash, and the proximity of the windshield. The stock speaker mounted differently I believe, can't remember exactly how though. I think it is one bolt though. there are better options out there,

Are you using the stock radio?

Larry has given you good info. Every GS I've ever had has a single bolt holding s special bracket that bolts up to the speaker itself. If your radio will have stereo outputs, the options Larry has linked will give you stereo sound from the single front location. You can then, install separate speakers in the rear package shelf to give you better separation and also better base sound.
Be sure, if you go that route and your GS has AC, to order the speaker for AC cars as the center AC duct will interfere with the non-AC model.

The package tray is at the rear. You do not need that.

If you want the factory speaker, www.turnswitch.com sells the correct, exact reproduction "special rectangle" 4x10 speaker. Also, be advised that the speaker NEEDS to be 8-10 ohms . Most modern speakers ar 4 ohm which are NOT compatible with the factory radio

X2 on these folks, super nice and will help you out. I recently updated my factory radio with a retro sound unit and replaced the old center speaker with the 4" x 10" Special Rectangle Stereo High Output and 2 new 6”x 9”s in the back. That way you have both left and right front channels. You can get this front stereo speaker in either 4 ohm for the new radios or 8 ohm for the old ones. It goes in using the factory mount below...for my 70GS it was the bottom left bracket.

I wanted to upgrade the stock system in my 70 GS. I had 6” speakers in the kick panels and I hated that look. So I decided to update the dash speaker instead and delete the kick panel speakers. For the dash speaker I wanted two independent speakers so I went with this:

I’ve always had good luck with Kicker. Form and fit was fine. It even came with a bracket which installed in the factory location and about a foot of speaker wire for each speaker. I have AC and it cleared the center duct. I have the same series 6x9’s for the back but haven’t installed yet. Running the USA-740 series radio which is overkill for me but it seems fine for Bluetooth. I believe I had the USA-630 and it was junk in my opinion.

Lol. I know I was looking for some info about radio mounts and found this post. Could be helpful to others maybe.

So Ross what did you end up doing? Lol!

Mine has updated front speakers in the center for both channels. I changed the rear 6x9 to a better quality speaker. Sounds okay with the updated custom sound radio - which I suggest as it looks stock. Am going to install a small powered bass under the rear seat (amazon) to fill in the weak. If finances allow I may add an amp in the trunk.I have a similar set up in my 55 chevy and am very happy with the sound... Hope this helps

I'm late for the party but have wondered about the function of this speaker, providing it's the Turnswitch unit.

I installed mine a couple years ago but recall only enough wires for one side of the speaker.

Ideally, I'd like to utilize both the left and right side, as well as the full potential of my Jim Shepard built Sonomatic AM radio.

That said: am I adding wires to my existing radio? Splitting/splicing wires to allow for the use of both speakers? Any guidance is appreciated.

If it is a am radio then it is not stereo. Both speakers could be used in either series or parallel given the ohm requirement of the radio.

If the radio offers a balance adjustment and the car has a rear speaker(s) than it would be a mono signal going to the front and same to the back.
