Does anyone have the part number for the front crankshaft seal in the front cover. I don't mean the old rope seal. CR#? or National? I can convert any number. I want to get a new seal before I take off the front cover and knowing my luck I will destroy the front seal when removing it and will not be able to read the number.

And this is post number 1,000 for me!!!!! :beer

    Thanks.

Thanks everybody for the help. I will get a seal tomorrow from NAPA and then maybe over the holidays get the job done.

    Thanks, again

The national number 450446 crosses over to NAPA or CR #19785.

I ordered the 19786 from NAPA but the OD is too big by about .022"

Since I now have the front cover off, the old seal which I bought from TA is a National 6988-H. It crosses over to a CR # 19240 or 19241 or 19242.

I ordered a CR from NAPA and a National seal from CarQuest. We will see what fits. I am trying to find out the exact deminsions of all of the seals.

Has anyone found the ID of the front cover to be different sizes?

I installed the new national front seal #6988-H and it fits fine. But the ID of the seal seems a bit tight on the balancer. I did a test fit before installing it in the front cover.

Has anybody else come up with a part number yet?

It's kinda fun playing around with the F-M parts specification/selector website. 470543 is a nitrile seal that is about 0.003" larger on the OD, so if your cover is worn, that will give you a tighter fit. 450472 is a nitrile seal that has a 0.032" smaller ID so if your balancer is worn, this will give a tighter fit. 7751H is a thinner silicone seal, so it can move the contact point inward to account for a groove worn in the balancer. But don't take these p/n's with any seriousness, I'm just playing around with the search/fit function on the website.

I looked at one of the spec books at work and came up with the same info.
The 6988-H is 1.937" going on a 2" balancer. That explains why it was so worn out. But it still lasted 15 years!

450446 is the right seal except for my housing! My ID is 2.708 and this seal would not go in. I already had the stake marks ground down from the old rope seal and measured in several places.

So next time I need a seal and the housing ID is too small for the 450446 then I found the 470360 (multi lip) or the 480360 (single lip) will fit my smaller housing and is the same OD as the 6988-H.

Thanks for all the help. :Smarty: :beer

Seems that a 2.717 seal would fit with a nice 0.009 interference fit in a 2.708 housing. And a that 2.69 seal would be too small.

I looked up 470360 and 480360 on the FM site and could not find the part numbers. Could be that they are being phased out.
