Doing some routine maintenence I changed my fuel filter today. I have an in line 3/8" filter between the tank and the Stage1 pump. It's literally located below driver door, middle of car above frame where the fuel line is. I also cracked open the Q-Jet inlet and the filter in there was slightly "twisted" due to what must have been a lot of pressure. I also noticed there's no spring.... Shouldn't there be a small spring between the filter and where fuel goes into the carb.. o No: Questions: Since I have a 3/8" inline Wix style Fuel filter, Do I still need the small one on the Q-Jet inlet? If it's recommended that I keep the small filter there, do I have to have the spring? I do have a 71 Q-Jet built by John Osborne on the car, I also have the stock numbers matching carb in a box. I cracked the inlet open on it and there was no filter or spring..... o No: I must have been running the stock carb without it and only using the 3/8 inline prior to having the 71 carb built by John. The car was sitting for a few years prior to the minor resto I did last year, so I just don't remember. Plus..... I think I ate to many funny brownies in my past, brain doesn't work as well... :beer Thanks for the help VinMan out.....
If you have another filter you do not need the one in the carb. If you DO use one in the carb, yes, there should be a spring behind it.
I hooked up the carb line with no filter, I previously was having some "fuel starving symptoms"....not all the time, just sometimes. I guess that poor little filter with no spring would get sucked up against the inlet to the carb and cause a restriction. No Filter, droive it this morning to the gym and I swear the SOTP meter reads...... pulls much harder! Those poor Polyglas tires I have on it (drove it the our 4th of July parade) are just no match. The ET streets will go back on. :beer
had the same problem!!and the same result!!(exept for the polyglas) :Brow: hey vinman, you seem to have an awesome car, you got some pics?man, must be great to live in cali, 12 month of pure hapiness..... :bglasses:
Marc, in NorCal the weather is perfect. No bash on SoCal, they have more Sunny days and way better beach's, but we have plenty of Sunny days in the Bay Area and we get a little more winter here. No Snow or anything like that, just more Rain which means more tree's.....more green. Besides some rain, you're correct.... I get to drive her 12 months a year :TU: I'll try and download a picture. L8er VinMan out.....
I must be a MORON because I can not figure out how to download a picture, I've been trying for 30 minutes...... ou:

I would strongly suggest taking out the fuel filter in the line as I have talked to many carb experts/mechanics who say this just makes the fuel pump work harder. The only place a car with the mechanical fuel pump operational should have an inline filter is between the pump and the carb. Why not just leave it in the carb where it belongs? I think the Doug Row Q-jet book even mentions this. Before I knew this I tried it in the line before the pump as well and had fuel pressure problems. Raced car both ways and actually got quicker times with the small stock filter in carb and always use spring or you will have problems. I decided not to screw with it anymore.
Roe says for competition to lose the stock filter and replace with an inline filter as close to the carb inlet as possible. Devon
I use the NAPA Marine Q-jet filter. It is Nylon, and flows much better than the paper filter. Don't know the part number. Dave Hemker gave me this one in Norwalk 2 years ago.
Larry, I have uploaded pics in the past by doing exactly what you show as procedure, I even did that 3 times. I'm an Electronic Sales Engineer and work with computers....IC's, Semi condutors....etc.... every friggin day. You'd think I wouldn't be a Moron with this stuff. Maybe it was a computer issue last night, but once I'd hit "submit reply"....no picture would show up. I'll try again. Fuel filter, thanks for the heads up guys, I'll replace the in-line one I have with some 3/8" fuel line and I'll go with the one Larry shows. Since Larry is "The Man".... :bglasses: .... and if he told me to wear a pink shirt and put a rainbow sticker on my car because it will make it .1 quicker in the 1/4 mile, I'd do it....
Oooops..... I more question, since I don't have a "SPRING" for the carb fuel filter, where can I get one and what pressure should it be if I just have to buy some generic springs? Thanks
MORON Alert.....MORON alert!!! ou: The previous picture I was trying to Up Load was too large a file. With the newer Digital Camera's this will continue to be an issue unless you scale down the resolution. Nonetheless... I found a smaller picture.
Vin, Everything you would likely need for your Q-jet at one time or another: http://www.carburetion.com/quadrajet.asp?ABCDEFGH
Many have had problems with the filter in the carb, as there are at least 3 different stock lenths (the 2 short ones very close, but not interchangeable). Throw in a variety of aftermarket fuel inlet nuts of varying degrees of quality, and you have a recipe for problems. I personally like the easily replaceable inline filters. Jon.
