Has anyone ever seen a fuel flow meter? I saw some on boats and planes.

Basically it is some kind of monitor that attaches between the gas tank and the engine. It sends its data to a gauge which displays how many gallons of fuel have flowed past the monitor.

This would be great because you could just divide the miles by the gallons used in a given trip and see very accurately what your mileage is for that trip. It would be a great tuning aid too. Or how many gallons of gas it takes to blow away a 5.0 mustang. hehe

Anybody ever seen one ? I wish there was one that just clips on to the fuel line without taking anything apart. Like an induction timing light clip.

Gary,I have seen a lot of flow meters but don't know of any commercially available that are inexpensive. If a person wanted to spend the money a turbine flowmeter from "Cox" would work well for that job and would install in the gas line after the fuel pump and could be calibrated to read in any units you like. Maybe do a search on E-Bay and see if something turns up. There have to be hundreds of flowmeters not being used in industry if you could only get to them and the necessary instrumentation and calibration information. They are size specific depending on the fuel flow range from min to max. Maybe a military surplus site would be a good place to look. You would need a small one probably around a -4 size or smaller. The fuel flow at idle would be very small. It might be tough to find one that would cover the entire range from idle to wide open throttle. Mike D.

There have been plenty of cars made with a mileage computer. They must be using some sort of flow meter.
