we were driving today about 60 miles to an antique show with my wife and her friend and my friend....figure that out . we went topless in the 70 electra rebuilt motor decent cam cruisin along and got to the show. well upon coming out it began to pour and fortunately i had a towel for such purposes in the trunk. got the boot off and 40 year old top up ( even though all the rest of the car is done including upholstery)......weell the passenger window wouldnt go up and my friend had to hold the towel in the window for 60 miles home. upon arrival as we parked the window went up by itself and almost took my friends finger off......moral of the story ...dont use weather.com...and always carry a towel in a convertible:bla:
In my Electra 1968 convertible, i have an umbrella for passenger. They have to use it last year. Looks funny. Goran
electraboat: I'm just jealous that you can ride with your top down this time of year. My convertible does not even get out of the driveway until April. Goran: Did you recently buy an old Cadillac (asking because of your sig pic) or have you had that all along?
Are there any convertibles out there that don't leak or is that just characteristic of a convertible. Seems everyone I know has to have a towel with them if it rains. How do you seal these things up ? o No:
My '67 is bone dry when driven in the rain, but I've only driven it in the rain once, so I am not super knowledgeable about its rain performance.
My 65 LeSabre leaked like a pig from multiple places on my way to a county fair off RTE 81 N out of Scranton, Pa a few years back. Normally don't drive it in the rain. Left my house and it was sunny and nice. They were having a car show as part of the fair, real nice event normally. Hit a line of thunderstorms coming down from southern NY into Pa, poured like heck. Man I mean water running brown along the sides of the road when I got off the interstate! God, I saw driftwood floating! I thought I was gonna have to abandon ship! (Boat, no pun intended!) Had 2 towels on the back seat and my wife and youngest son were trying to keep up with it but NO WAY! 20 min later sky turned brilliant blue and it dried right up except for the show field which was dirt/grass. Guys were all muddied up! I mean expensive restored cars. I felt bad for them! I found a small gravel patch to beach her on and made out ok. Minor mud washed off the next day!
Reminds me of a `64 Galaxie convertible I bought years ago just to sell. I had it at a show one day and since it was a nice day I put the top down. Some people came along that showed some interest in it and wanted to see the top, so I pushed the switch and it came up about a foot and stopped. I reached under the dash, wiggled the wires and it worked. The thing about that car is that the top is about the only thing that hadn't given me a problem since I bought it. Anyway, when I got home I put that top up and down 12 times and had no trouble at all :af:
The day I went to pick up my convertible it began to pour rain about two minutes into my drive home (a twenty-five minute drive). Luckily none of the rain leaked in at all - a good test for the convertible but I do avoid rain whenever possible.
Hi Rob. The Cadillac, i have had for many years, and me and family have travel many miles in it. Very reliable. It is a family member. Goran
I avoid it when I can, but Ive been caught in the rain. 2 of those times were very hard rain. Inside stayed dry as a bone.
My top is relatively new. Driving in the rain is no problem, but when I stop, it is like I'm standing under a shower. It comes from side of where the top contacts with the front windshield frame. Is there a way to seal this up properly?
I've had two big Buick convertibles and they both leaked. On my 67 Cat the brand new roof leaked at the windshield joint, and on my current Electra not only does it leak there as well, but it rolls down the rails and straight onto my lap. After a good downpour it always looks like I p----d myself unless I have a towel around. Then there's the next problem; - people see you driving around with a towel over your groin area they think you're some kind of a pervert or something...I've gotten many a strange look from idiots who don't realize that it's raining inside my car. Yeah, convertibles are a blast. If anyone knows how to properly line up a roof I'd seriously like to hear it, I'm getting a new roof put on my '66 Electra this spring and I don't want it to leak.
At speed in our '62 Galaxie in the rain with a mal-adjusted top.. yep, got a little wet. Sometimes it's better to leave it down and just go faster! <object width="425" height="344"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9IfRTYdu2zs&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></object>
2 days after my torrential storm drive with the leaky top ,i noticed a puddle under my passenger mat about a foot in diameter. we did run the heater that day. who votes for all the water coming in the door and window or heater core leaking :ball:
