I'm currently in the planning stages for putting up a garage. I've just started looking at different choices and I have a price on a few steel buildings. I found a steel building that looks nice and can be finished with whatever I want(wood, siding etc.) for about 12k, not including the foundation. I haven't priced out just having the foundation poured and building one out of wood yet. Thats next on the list. What can I expect to pay for a foundation and wood in everyones experience? I'll build it myself with the help of some friends and family, they all owe me big time anyway. I'm thinking about 30 feet wide by 30-35 feet deep. I did find a steel building 30 by 40 for 12k, but I really want to keep that as my upper limit, 13K at the most. What can I build for that much money? I do plan on putting in a lift if I have money leftover after construction, so I have to take that into consideration when I build the walls. The cheaper the better for constructing it myself and buying a lift to put in the place.

    any ideas?

a guy i worked with put up one of those steel buildings, he said it was a major pain. The price was good but the labor it took to put it together was crazy. Plus it looked kind of crapy. :(
I want to build pretty much the same size garage you do, I was thinking of going the usual wooden frame cement foundation, or maybe building it with cement blocks. I haven't really looked at the pricing yet. A rough guess would probably be in the 15k range.

I built a 32x48 pole barn last year. I cost about $13 plus the concrete for the floor. I was told to try and keep everything in multiples of 4's if building with wood for less to no scrap and maximum use of the materials.

    Sounds great Bob!

Prices vary all over the country, down here every thing is double because of our building boom. Concrete is $118 /YD, 7/16 OSB is $17.50! Keeping every thing in multiples of 2 or 4 does help. Just remember:

A garage can never be too big :TU:

Make the garage so it matches your house, the whole property will look better.

Make the ceiling high - adds to floor storage and you can use a lift/storage buddy later. You can use cathedral ceil/scissor trusses over part of the space to give you a bump up.

Make the bottom stringer on the other roof trusses 2X6 so you can floor the attic and use it for storage.

    Good luck! - Bill
