I have a 350 in my 72 skylark and i was thinking about putting a 455 in it. But because it is my everyday car, I was a little worried about the gas mileage i would get. What kind of mileage do you all get? And what price range am i looking to put a 455 in my skylark?
I have a 200R4 overdrive behind my 455 and get 17-18 with "spirited" driving. I could probably get better if I could my foot out of it, but that can cause brain damage. Keith
With my th400, I get about 12 mpg. But I'm putting a 200R4 in over the winter, not that I care about my mpg.
I had a 455 in my '85 chevy pickup, bored .030 over (462ci), 9:1 compression, straightline performance cam (220/235, .473/.476 lift, 112LSA), '72 heads, '76 4bbl intake and carb, stock exh manifolds.... backed up with a 700-r4 and 3.73 gears. got about 11.8 in town and 17 on the highway, best highway MPG I got was 18.6.
Thanks I'm really leaning toward the 455. Do any of you know where I can find a decently cheap one with a transmission? I'm not wanting a high dollar performance 455, just one that I can work on and build up myself.
Lets be realistic here. once you drive a 455 powered car you will realize that gas mileage doesnt matter. you can't put a price on happiness and driving with a 455 is pure happiness
455 and MPG ?? your kidding? yeah maybe if you put an egg under the pedal .Sure you might get the 17mpg stated above but than again you will have to put a lot of miles on to make up for the savings it will cost you to convert the trans diffs etc..If its your every day ride than just keep on driving it ..GM figured out it was uneconomical back in 1976.
