finally got my carb's hesitation fixed, but it still has a strong gas odor after shutting engine off the carb#is 7045240,1975 350 eng.has no external leaks.
could the fuel pump return be blocked? or the well plugs be leaking? does not flood at all. any thoughts??

Next time you park the car hot, wait a few minutes and then take the air cleaner lid off. Look down into the carb. Is is wet in there? I am having this problem with a Holley. Float could be too high, or needle and seat could be sealing poorly.

Something to consider here is the quality of the fuel we are expected to use. The vapor pressure of today's fuel is considerably higher than 30 years ago due to the closed systems of today's fuel injection. The result is that the fuel will evaporate faster, and create more problems, including nozzle drip at shutdown. Check the float level. If correct remember this: the higher vapor pressure of taday's fuel will get hot due to the temperature of underhood components, which will raise pressures. This increased pressures will force fuel into the bowl, in spite of the closing pressure created by the float. The pressure will originate from the boiling fuel in the fuel pump, and the lines. This may lead to flooding, slow hot startups, and some black smoke at start up. If you have covered all of the bases, remember that. Ray

I really like this answer, I just can't get all of this carb stuff under control, and here comes an answer from the world everyone livs in.. My car reaks of gas, and I'm starting to think that sitting in those fumes for two hours every day might not bee too good. A new cap will be purchased next time I'm at the auto store.
