I will be picking up my new tank and sending unit in a few days, or so, I will check my manuals to verify; but, I am sure someone has the information, pictures, ect. of where the sending unit ground screw attaches to. If so, post them for me. Len
Gas Tank Installation Len, I just replaced mine last week. Piece of cake. After some good advice from this board. wipe the tank down with lacquer thinner and spray it with some clear coat. Dont forget to put some 30lb roof felt ( or 2 layers of 15lb felt) on top of the tank. And last but not least the grounding wire attaches to the body on either side side of the tank. There is a small hole on either side. PS dont forget to replace all the fuel vent lines and hoses that are probably cracked and look like crap. Good Luck Dave
Technically, the ground screw goes into the gas tank strap supports. Those are the two, approx 5-6" wide supports that are welded to the bottom of the trunk pan.
Gas tank grounding Mine was factory attached as mentioned to the body. And yes the clear coat will stick as long as you wipe it down good with the lacquer thinner. George helped me thur my replacement and many thanks to him
When replacing the vent and fuel lines, don't forget that the one larger vent line (evap emission control) has a small plastic piece with a small orifice inside it. Don't throw it away!!! It keeps fuel from getting directly into the vapour separator. later Tim
Thanks guys. Should I cut strips of the 30# felt to put between the straps and the tank? There wasn't any when I dropped the tank; but, it could have been taken out previously. Len
I'm sure you didn't since the replacement will be regular fuel hose. Anyway, on the 71/72 models with the evap control, there is a small orifice drilled into a piece of plastic that is inserted into the hose for that line. Its located near the front of the line (red arrow), which has a yellow stripe on it, I can take pictures of one of the orifice tubes if you wish (later). From what I can gather its supposed to keep fuel out of the evap system since when the car is started it will suck through there, this way it limits the flow and also keeps you from applying full vacuum to the tank (although it will allow a little). later Tim
so do I need to find a replacement orafice and put it in that line? where would I find such a thing? will it run alright without it?
I would. Without it you may introduce vacuum into the tank, not sure what issues you might have there. Or maybe not, I really don't know but GM put it there for a reason. Later Tim
I have never seen a Skylark with anything between the gas tank straps and tank. Use the 30 lb roofing felt between the tank and trunk floor.
