Hi Guys, Ok i have a GM 8.5 ten bolt rear and i just installed new custom axles and a TA rear girdle axle cover that has the oil drain and oil level plugs on the rear cover. Well i have put just about six quarts of gear oil and two little bottles of limited slip addative and the oil is not dripping out of the rear plug yet on the back of the new cover. I got to looking at the old oil plug level on the side of the yoke and the new one on the rear cover sets up much higher. If i fill it to the new oil plug level both axle tubes will be completely full of gear oil. I think this is way too much gear oil and there will be no room for heat expansion and and at a 120 mph in the 1/4 mile it will blow out some oil seals. Common sense tells me to fill it to the old oil plug level and let it go at that. Anybody ever run into this problem what do you guys think.

I would use the orig oil fill plug as your guide.

    Oil level.

I filled it up to the original oil plug level and then i added and extra half quart to it. They say you can raise the oil level a little more than stock. But if i was to fill it to the new oil plug level on the back of this cover it would have taken about eight quarts and the axle tubes would be completely full. I'm sure it would have pushed some gear oil out the breather tube on the axle housing.

    6 qts???
Stock is 2 qts + 1 small bottle of GM posi additive. The aftermarket alum support covers don't add that much fluid capacity, you should be able to get away with no more than 3 qts total.

    Fill Plug

THE REAR COVER PLUG IS FOR FILLING ONLY NOT FOR LEVEL CHECKING. Use the Original fill plug hole for your reference. Trust GM. :) Jim

    Oil level.

I used the original fill plug hole. I did not get any paper work with the new rear cover and was not sure. But after looking at the level difference between the original fill plug hole and the one on the new rear cover i could see a big difference. Hell you would have the rear axle assembly almost full and gear oil would come out the air vent tubes on the axle.

    diff

correct. and you would have probably broke something with all the fluid resistance in there. drive shaft, tranny etc. Better that you asked then find out the hard way. Jim

I run only 2 qts. Not alot of lube is needed if you have sealed axle bearings.
Less likely to leak out the c-clip eliminators, too.
I've seen stockers (stock elim) run 1 qt of trans fluid....that's it.....for record runs. Worth .10 et.
