My youngest son will be a senior in high school this year and wants to build a project car. Had been showing me pics of 90's Camaros that are thrashed. Took him up to my buddies grandpa's where my other Skylark has been sitting in the woods for almost 30 years after cracking frame as a kid. No rust no dents we were amazed. Interior of course is badly weathered but very solid still. After being a mechanic all my life the crack in the frame doesn't bother me as it did before I knew how to fix things. Might have to modify that area to do air ride any how. He is excited. Got a guy in town going to sell him his 455 with EFI in a few weeks when he pulls it out to do an LS swap. Hopefully can go get it next weekend and bring it home. Got carport all cleaned out and organized. Wife says she will park in driveway so we can work on it this winter still.
Hummmmm. I spy a 1960 Chevy wagon and a Skyhawk (?) in the background. Good luck with your work with your son.
I've been on here for years but finally getting my son into Buicks There's an Electra a GS a crushed GS convertible a Wildcat and many others All future projects for his uncle that owns most of them? Fun to go wonder those woods and dream.
A realistic goal and it could be a rewarding and fun project. The journey with your son will be remembered for years. Enjoy and let us know how you are progressing!
Went and looked at this last night rebuilt 72 455 with Atomic EFI and he said an RV cam so not sure on that yet. Built by our local Napa machine shop. The guys brother is their machinist. Hey ask that you see on the engine but the ac compressor and he might keep the air cleaner if he needs it for clearance. It's my son's now. Guy will pull it out in a few weeks after the big Hot August Nights car show at the end of the month here.
Brought my son's first project car home today! He's excited to build a car like Dad's and have somewhat matching cars. He wants to black out all out, of course. Got it completely psi washed and pulled all interior out and vacuumed. Little rusty on floor pan on passenger side and around back window but not too bad. Frame is bent and cracked slightly behind rf control arms. He will definitely learn lots by the time he has it up and driving. Gonna be lots of fun. Let the games begin!
Here is a few. Got the floor boards cleaned up. Gonna need to replace some of them and part of trunk floor. Off to go strip a parts car this weekend. Get column, throttle tail lights a few brackets. Maybe a driver hood hinge.
Couple of new pics Engine is what is going in it In a buddies car right now Painted a set of old Cragars that chrome was flaking off Got complete inside and the trunk sanded and painted black almost done priming engine bay and will paint it red Just put sound deadener on floor boards and will spray bed liner on bottom side over the few holes will replace pans later if it becomes more of a show than race car Took bumpers off sanded and painted all brackets and body behind them and put back on As soon as we get hood hinge from Bruno can put hood on Welded crack in frame and filled holes where engine frame pads were cut out Lug nuts just got here tonight so finally can put wheel and tires on Now to do suspension and brakes Modify tank for fuel injection pump getting closer Any of you ever just modify stock trans cross member to bolt to frame instead of using the rubber end pads Don't have those mounts yet and would think if bolted it would add a little stiffness to frame?
Put wheels and tires on today and had to push outside to take a few pics Tires will end up being bigger but these are matching for now Front bumper just hanging there right now still need to paint core support
Engine bay is painted got steering column painted and put in throttle pedal in fenders and bumpers bolted on Pulled rear diff and control arms to clean and paint Might box in lowers while off
Wow, you guys are going to have a blast with that car. That is a real special opportunity for you both. Building a classic muscle car in your senior year is like quintessential high school. I'm close in age to your son and in my experience kids our age love seeing these old cars despite maybe not being as into cars as kids used to be. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this build.
