I'm new to cars and am lost sometimes reading these theads or car magazines. Is there a website or good book with terms everyone "should" know?

Thanks for helping out a rookie

OK like NOS what does that mean? What does matching Numbers mean? I think I have an idea but not exactly sure.

    SkylarkSteve Hello Michael

NOS stands for new old stock, basically replacement items made about the same time the cars were made but never used. Matching numbers refers to a car in which the VIN on the frame, engine and body all match. It lets people know that the car never underwent drastic changes. I don't know of anyplace that has all car related terms defined, but what I've done is search on google. For example I didn't know what the A/R ratio refered to when speaking about turbos, but after looking it up on google I found out. And of course there are always a lot of helpful people here who wouldn't mind answering your questions. :TU:

NOS = New old stock i.e. a part that is old, but has not been installed.
Matching numbers generally means a car has the original engine, trans, etc. But it can mean a great deal more...all parts carry a part number and can be found and identified, and determined to be correct or not for a particular car. The part number and the date code must also co-inside with the overall time period the car was produced as well as the cowl tag.

So a matching numbers car could have a new engine if someone tracked down one within a range. is that right? My father-in-law has a 67 Firebird that he put a new engine in 78. Would it be possible to track down a matching engine? Worth it? I know not a pontiac BB. :)

No it would not. The vin number is stamped on the block of the engine and needs to match the Vin of the car to be numbers matching.
NOS can also mean Nitrous Oxide.
