you can find a 350 in most cutlass's from 69 to 77,and most 69 to 76 olds cars and the gold painted motor(if factory) is alittle more powerful than the smoggers from 76 on up :TU:

II think I may have mis-stated. '76 is okay. Stay away from '77 and newer, they are the ones with the windowed mains.

All 403s and 307s have windowed mains. There are rumors of solid main 403s, but neither I, nor anyone I know, nor anyone on any site I visit, have ever seen one.

For the 307, it's hard to get it to make enough power for the windowed mains to matter (short of a massive shot of nitrous). The 403, however, is easily capable of making too much power with its (comparatively) massive bore. Even the 350 can be easily put to the point where the engine is on the verge of puking the crank out through the oil pan. I'd be willing to bet the 403 will give up long before the windowed 350; both motors have the exact same stroke, but the rotating assembly on the 403 is much heavier.

If you go for a 403, you're stuck with the windowed mains. Plus, the 403 has siamesed bores just like the 400 SBC, which would make it more sensitive to an inadequate cooling system.

Me, personally, I chose a non-windowed 350 Olds for my 442. I figured the trans and gearing setup (200-4R w/3.73s, 2500 stall) was better suited for a higher revving, lower torque motor. That and, at the rate I'm going, I'll have a 350 from every GM division that made one.

    olds 350

jon : i'm in upstate ny near binghamton , was reading through your info . when i picked up a couple of buick 350 motors and trans a while back i also scarf'd up an olds 350 motor complete . its just a 2 bbl unit but i think it is late 60's or early 70's in vintage and after i had it totally apart it didn't seem too bad , need rings , brg's , +.030 pistons , etc and some basic machine shop time . also have some 350 headers ( used , but not much ) and a set of new moroso chrome valve cvr's . $300.00 for all . also have a th400 trans that came with it that i can't vouch for but fluid looks ok and it has a new modulator on it ?? $100.00 for trans , that was something i may use later so wasn't too worried about getting rid of that but room is room . i doubt i'll use the olds motor . the olds 350's are supposedly pretty stout pieces with decent aftermarket parts available including alum. heads from edelbrock , intakes , etc and a couple specialty aftermarket companys such as mondello's and dick miller i think . the one reply was correct i think , the diesel blocks can take some real pounding when set up for gas , they might not be as available now as the years go by . man they were crappy as diesels . del
