Im not blaming anyone because im still unsure of the cause and will never blame anyone. So guys check your pc's for any stupid stuff. Thanks for listening to me  about my problems. I had issues with mine wanting to start in "safe mode" and I deleted some programs, trying to get rid of some stuff I didn't put there by found it's way onto my system. Anyway- I lost all my old emails in Outlook and everyone's email from this board, including some which were really important. I guess it happens to all of us! Good luck Rob!
Our dell is having a few problems at the moment (aka, doesn't work) so I gotta call them, thank god for 1 year on-site. Do you use ad-aware? That would probably help quite a bit. Use netscape with the popup blocker turned on (Edit>Preferences>Privacy and Security>Popup Windows). Using that has protected this computer from everything that the other one got because certain people in my family couldn't use netscape. :spank: :spank:
Good luck Rob. Best of luck and wishes! My new Dell(about a yr old, not quite), I had to totally reboot my comp. because of a virus!:af:  Always do your virus updates and if you have virus protection(norton or mcathy), use it every day before you shut-down. Just some advice. See ya soon Rob!:beer -Cody
I've had to reboot my computer a few times now, thats why i suggest saving valuable stuff to disc or cd, with the number of trojan horses, viruses and the like, it makes it almost essential so as not to lose a lotta neato stuff. Hope it works out well for ya, Patrick
If you have Windows long enough, you'll eventually be able to reinstall within a few hours.... Good luck.
The BAD part is that I DO computer support for a living.... I said the SAME thing back in '96 after all the Win 95 headaches... Some advise....try to clean up the registry with something like "SpyBot Search & Destroy." Just Google for it...you'll find it. it keeps all 400 of the systems at work nice an clean. Another goodie is "RegScrubXP"...tuens up that windows registry something great. IANAL, so you're milage may vary. -- Larry '70 Electra Convertible
I've got my firewall up. Am getting about ten intrusion attempts per minute, mainly the netsky worm and variants. I've spent hours scanning viruses, removing cookies, internet files, etc. trying to keep this thing clean, including inspecting the register and deletingsome things there too. Not to mention spam control, etc. Getting about half a dozen infected spam emails a day too which are quarantined and deleted. Feels like a war zone.
The only software Ill pay for and not complain about is my my Norton System works, it is worth its weight in gold, and the router helps too...
All I can say is that if you're running XP, KEEP YOUR WINDOWS UPDATED! I tried to reinstall XP at home- even formatted the hard drive. I got a virus immediately after connecting to the 'net. The only way I could successfully install it was by downloading an autopatcher http://www.autopatcher.com/autopatcherxp.html at work. XP is way too open. I didn't even have time to get the updates off the windows site before being infected by a virus. As soon as I reinstalled XP and the autopatcher, everthing was good.
Did you turn on the built in firewall for xp? It helps quite a bit and surprisingly, I'd say xp is right at the top of the list of "most secure windows versions".
I'm back! and only using 3 gig! Cody Behling- I use ad-aware but the virus overpowered it and it couldnt even detect it. Cody- Dell installed this stupid Mcaffe (sp) and it doesnt do anything. And wouldn't let me delete it. Patrick- thanks for the advice about the storing stuff on cds i did that just before system restore. Larry-I also had Spybot S&D that worked but never took care of the problem conpletely. Mike- I will try the same approach in the future. Michael B.-I got Norton, actually works, and GREAT! Steve-I had all the nessasary window updates. Thanks Thanks everyone else too!
If mcaffee doesn't want to repair or delete it, tell it to quarantine, then you can delete it that folder.
I recently changed to Zone Alarm Pro with Antivirus, works good so far! I bought an external hard drive (mp3jukebox) so I can back up my important files. Same thing happened to me, you have to do: 1. Open Outlook Express. 2. Under the Tools menu, select Accounts. 3. Select your SBC e-mail account and choose "Properties". 4. Select the "Advanced" tab, under the "Delivery" section, please check the "Leave a copy of messages on the server" option. 5. Click Apply, and then OK. This should work, good luck :TU: Slawek
