Are there any good books out there that are not to technical for AC systems like the 1 in a 71 skylark? I've basically made up my mind on the AC, either i fix what i have or i just plain don't have AC. Either way I'm gonna leave everything in the car. My car came with all the AC parts, I just have no idea how to fix the system, and if i really want to convert it over to 134a or some other refrigerant.

1 more thing whats the deal on ES-12a? I have some sites praise this stuff and then the other 1/2 are completely opposite saying is dangerous and extremely flammable.

The book mentioned here is really good, but it doesn't cover your 71 POA/TXV system specifically:

    https://www.ackits.com/pc/DIY-STARTER1/DIY/DIY-STARTER1+-+DIY+Starter+Kit
It is available separately from the tool kit shown. A Google search will find it. However, if you want to repair your AC, you WILL need access to everything in that kit to do the job along with some other things not mentioned.
The Harrison/Frigidaire POA AC system in your car was last used in the mid-70s for the most part. Finding books specifically about it isn't going to happen unless you have the factory shop manual.
However, there is a huge amount of info available here in The Big Chill, on other GM related forums and on vehicle AC related forums such as www.autoacforum.com . The search function is your friend.

I checked the compressor wires and replaced the A/C hoses on my '71 and took it to a local shop for a vacuum check and charging. It cost me a few hundred dollars but I have real cold factory A/C. I am happy with the results.
