A coworker of mine picked up a clean '65 Chevelle last week and knowing of my '64 Skylark he asked me to drive it and give my opinion. I took it for a spin and told him that the ZZ4 350, T350 trans, and 4.10 geared 12 bolt made for a "peppy" driver that revs a bit high on the highway but is overall a fun driver. He seemed a bit bummed that I called it "peppy" so I told him I would run my big block Skylark to work and let him experience what torque can do. I let him drive my Buick and he seemed authentically afraid of what my car was capable of. It was an amusing ride watching the excitement change to fear and back to excitement as he gained a lot of respect for the power of the Buick versus his small block Chevy. After work on my drive home I rolled up on a tuned Mazda 3 with a Car Craft sticker on the rear glass. Didn't think much of it other than the Car Craft sticker which led me to believe he might have some interest in older iron. The driver, a young 20's male paced me for over a mile nudging his girlfriend in the passenger seat and pointing at my car. Couldn't have set up a better scenario if I tried but sure enough we ended up side by side at a red light on a section of road less traveled. The guy rolled down his window and cupped his ear grinning at the lumpedy lump of the big block at idle. I knew he didn't have anything to run with me but I figured if he gave a launch I would give him a small show. The light went green and he pulled 2 gears rolling through the intersection. I rolled out soft and slowly pressed the pedal to the floor about the time his Mazda exhaust pipe was buzzing in my passenger window. The front end raised, exhaust note turned into a forceful roar, and the Mazda was quickly shrinking in the rear view. I lifted shortly after 3rd gear was hit and returned to cruising speed. The Mazda rolled up next to me and both the driver and his girl had thumbs up and huge smiles for me.
