I have a 2004r in my car (in D) it shifts around 4000rpm.
i want it at 5000-5300 rpm.
CK master kit in it, great kit, trans is great except WOT in D, shifts 3800rpm

question, does the trained eye see the modified governor shifting my 3900lb BBB @4000 or 5000.

i did email Chris at CK Performance.

    Cheers!

that is a heavy weight governor. It will not 5000 WOT shift. You need to lighten those weights. Or buy a light weight governor assembly.

It looks like one was lightened a little, and what is that rivet? Hard to tell what the mods would achieve.

Look up my 200-4r swap summary thread here.

I cut/modified the weights on that governor to achieve 5krpm shifts and documented the necessary modifications. Go a little at a time and cut only what you need to achieve the shifts that you are looking for.

PS Chris at CK is one of the most knowledgeable sources for 2004r info, and is always willing to help, from my experience. Listen to him and believe what he says.

The 200-4r is a bastard to get right. Because it's output shaft speed dependent and valve body dependent. It doesn't help that you have to drop the pan to make modifications either. The unfortunate answer is its a trial and error deal to get right.

I had 4.56 gears in my car for all of last year and cut down the governor quite a bit just to get the shift points to reasonable speeds, now I swapped in 3.42 gears it shift points are a tad high, but I also got it to shift right around 5,500 rpm at WOT.

One side is part throttle and the other WOT.

i'm happy with all shift points except WOT.
Do you know which side is WOT?
if i only trim the WOT side will it effect the lower rpm's?

    Cheers!

Small side needs to be made smaller. However, once again, the 200-4r is a bastard and though the biggest change will be at WOT, the part throttle may/will be effected by the change, just not as much as WOT. Have you removed the spring from the big side? I did, and I'm considering re-installing it as I believe it should lower my part throttle shift points.

Again, my advice is take a bit off at a time. Trial and error unfortunately is the only reliable way to get to where you want IMO. The modifications are sensitive to what valve body you have in the transmission as well, so don't just go copying the following pictures, yours may be more or less sensitive to the weight changes.

One of many ways to grind it down.

There are a fair number of google searches looking for the same thing. On mine I just removed the spring from the big weight and ground the bejezus out of the small weight. I took three tries at it before I said "good enough". I actually rather it shift a bit early than a bit late or right on time because I personally prefer manually shifting the car at WOT and when I pull the lever I want it to shift right then. Where as right now, if I pull the lever for 3rd gear at say 4,500rpm because I really don't need the extra rpm when getting on the freeway/highway, it stays in gear until I let up or it hits the ~5,500rpm.

TexasT Texas, where are you from

Which vb/gov combo are you working with?

Unless you are into trying with trial and error sometimes it is just easier to obtain an mcss/turbo buick/442/tta vb/gov combo and bolt it in.

As the pix above show there are a plethora of combos out there and mixing and matching can create more problems than it solves.

I thought I pm'd you a link to the article on shift points. If not here it is. Lots of info.
what does that pink spring do?

I believe the rivet is for spring retention. As many(including me) have found, when performing a burnout to heat tires, and having the tires come to an abrupt stop, the governor stops too sometimes throwing the spring, resulting in no wot shift.

Keep us up on what you do as this is an art and the info out there as many have found isn't accurate or complete much of the time.

I'm no guru but I have taken my share of trans fluid baths in my driveway modding the 2004r.
